well, a never ending financial crises, high salary-lower expectations, easy gals...

mattsm84:

The financial crisis is over, and the US has handled the recession pretty well all things considered. I'll take the US's next 50 years over China's in a heart beat. I'm married, so easy girls aren't all that important. $36,000 a year isn't a high salary. Granted everything is cheaper, but the standard of living here is just so much much lower. And other people's expectations never bothered me, even if I haven't resigned myself to being a dirtbag.

But more importantly. Why make 36k when we can make two or even three times that. Why settle for one car when we could have two? Why settle for one kid when we can have two? Why live in a crummy apartment building when we can have a house? Why force my children into the frankly lack luster Chinese education system that I'd be expected to shell out money for when the US education is just fine, provided you go to school in the suburbs, and is free. Why force them to spend their evening suffering under the florescent lights of some shitty cram school when they could play sports, learn to drive, get a job, or get a girlfriend of boyfriend. It's just a better life for me and my family.

No, I read the news. Recession=over. Here are the statistics.

http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/gdp-growth As for why we come, we do it for travel and to see a different part of the world. Very few teachers here make more money or enjoy a higher standard of living than we would in our home countries. I'm not trying to make you feel bad about where you're from, I'm just telling you how it is.

One loser writing one book? Well case closed then!

Actually, Matt's absolutely right about people's motivations. There are many reasons for people to travel to China (and other places, remember China is not the only option and certainly not the only country with many expats). Some are relatively negative - people sitting out the financial storm - but I'd say most are positive.

Interesting graph, Matt, has there been jobs growth to match the GDP figures?

11 years 5 weeks ago

mattsm84:

Here is the Job growth rate: http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES0000000001?output_view=net_1mth

But what is interesting here is that the private sector is growing as the public sector (police, firefighters, teachers et al.) is retracting. (Source: http://tinyurl.com/aa28jrf) The reason for that is that babyboomers are starting to retire, and our pension system is frankly over burdened. If fact, when you see the articles about the US's national debt, you should understand that a great deal of that spending goes towards these people.

Anyway,

Here is the unemployment rate: http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/unemployment-rate

And the total number of employed persons: http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/employed-persons

I'd like to see another round of QE, but that's sort of unlikely.

mattsm84:

Yea, but here Australia is at a very distinct advantage over the US, loathed as I am to admit it, if only because you seem to be in the middle of a very profitable mining boom that shows no sign of abating in the near future. The economic growth that that's going to be the engine for is going to provide enough revenue to off-set spending, even as that spending is set to increase, which means annual deficits will be smaller--and that means less total accrued debt and a smaller likelihood experiencing South Americanesque inflation rates. Further, the debt to GDP ratio would remain smaller, and that really the number that people should focus on when it comes to debt.

The US could do just as well, if its IT and manufacturing industries perform as well as they should, but that's not a sure thing. The financial industry could collapse again, although I think that that's unlikely. Further, a new free trade agreement with Europe, which is being discussed, would also be a shot in the arm, but again, that's still a maybe. However, our biggest problem one of our political parties is over represented in the legislature and it, unfortunately, has absolutely no grasp of monetary policy. More importantly it doesn't understand that spending is often investment and slashing spending now would lead to a .6% drop in economic growth per-quarter.

haha pathetic, really. Maybe you are not updated. Chinese go abroad for a better education but then they come back. Chinese people don't immigrate anymore to the west as refugee but as rich investors...

mattsm84:

2,166,526. That's the number of current immigrants (full citizen) in the US that were born in China. And that doesn't count their children, or family they plan to immigrate or students and what not that are in the process of immigrating. If you think all those people are rich investors then you're kidding yourself. Living in the US is just a better life.

There was a time that I thought about it.  But it wasn't because I loved China and wanted to be a party member.  It was simply because of financial reasons.

If you are working in China as an American and you make over a certain amount of money, you are taxed both in China and in the US.  The tax is SO high at that point that you actually can end up having to pay so much tax that you almost end up on the negative side of the equation.

But, in the end, Chinese taxes are much worse than US taxes.  Since in the US I can file a return and get a lot of the money I paid back.  In China, you can't do that.  Which, I think is one of the main reasons for all the "grey" income in China.  But that is another topic.

Traveler:

I saw this month that they are extending that tax to include all green card holders, and all assets in all countries.

Apparently this leaves the corrupt Chinese officials who fled to the USA in the position of paying huge amounts of American tax, or returning to China for possible execution.

no. Most people have no idea just how much I love America. After laughing at politicians who kept saying that America was the last hope of freedom in the world (they don't know why they say this, they just repeat lines), and then traveling abroad, I realized they were right.

America really is the last hope of freedom in the world. If you disagree, maybe you're from one of the countries who needs to have the shit freed out of them with a few aircraft carriers, B52s, etc.

Fact is, if America weren't the superpower she is, other crazy-ass nations like China and North Korea would be free to run amuck and cause all sorts of trouble, without much worry of retaliation, etc. Go ahead and disagree, but it's true.

Imagine China dominating the world. Do you really want that to happen? Imagine all these rogue nations who keep pursuing nuclear weapons. Do you think that should be allowed, especially when they've sworn to use said weapons on their enemies for religious nutbag/nationalist reasons which make absolutely no sense? Or do you think someone should fight against it?

Fact is, if America weren't around, this world would be a much worser place. I greatly appreciate human rights, which I believe are universal. "But this is China!"? Shut your mouth.

giadrosich:

Great answer! wink I've often posed this question to those who "hate America," being, "okay, who would you want to be a super-power instead?" Usually, the answer is a joke...

In Australia, I get free healthcare of a high quality in clean hospitals. Doctors and nurses don't get routinely killed by crazed patients.

Primary and high school education are free, and at one of the highest standards in the world. Crazed lunatics don't go into our schools stabbing the children at will.

At university, the government pays 70% of tuition fees, and lends the students the rest as an indefinite interest fee loan. The awards gained are recognised internationally, and not just within the country in which they are issued. Lecturers do not rape students and throw them off buildings.

The apartment I live in is clean and not falling apart because of poor workmanship. It is insulated for warmth in winter and to keep cool in summer. The furniture and electricals don't fall apart after a few weeks. I only have to pay rent weekly, not three months at a time.

The car I drive doesn't have asbestos in it. The drivers drive in an orderly manner, and usually on just one side of the road.

I can go swimming at the beaches and in the rivers, without having to worry about toxic chemicals killing me. I can drink the water straight from the taps, again, not having to worry about it killing me.

I can go jogging in the parks and streets, without having to dodge litter, spit, urine and faeces. I don't have to worry that the air I am breathing is killing me.

I don't have to worry that the food I am eating is killing me, or that the milk I give my baby will also be a killer. I don't have to worry that the clothes I wear have been treated with chemicals that will cause health problems.

I can travel to, and live in, any city I want to, without having to register immediately with the police station, or worry about some ridiculous hukou system. I can freely travel to almost any country on earth, without fear of visa rejection based on my fellow citizens almost always overstaying their visas. I don't get turned away from the best hotels, because my countrymen are considered the worst tourists in the world.

I can protest against my government, my employer, large companies or social issues without having to worry about three years detention without charge or trial.

I can have as many children as I like. In fact, my government gives me thousands of dollars cash for each child I have. There are no forced abortions on women that can't pay huge bribes to corrupt officials.

Racial hatred and gender discrimination are not taught in the schools, nor promoted by the government. In fact, such things are punished in my country.

My country doesn't have territorial disputes with 20 countries, nor does it have trade or political disputes with almost every country on earth.

Most importantly, my country is not headed for complete economic, political, social and environmental collapse in the very near future, unless Tony Abbott wins the election in September (joking). But at least we actually get to elect our leaders.

So no. I wouldn't give up my citizenship to become Chinese, even if such a thing was possible. However, almost anybody can become an Australian citizen, and thousands of Chinese renounce their own country each year to do just that.

MissA:

Amen brother.

* Except Chinese drivers....

But, I do like what Scandanavian had to say - but we only started having to pay for our tertiary education a couple of decades ago (funny how the pollies who didn't have to pay for it, now make us...). But, Traveler, I do have to take an issue with you... Austudy and its ilk are ridiculously low, so 'moderately high' is BS!!

OTOH, you did forget to also mention, if I happen to lose my job, the government will help me live by giving me a (barely) liveable amount of money to live on.

I also know that if I happen to be involved in an accident, I'm pretty sure the other party won't try to take everything from me - even if it's their fault. I also live in a country where insurance is automatically included in one's car registration, so that if I happen to cause an accident, it won't cost me my house to pay for the medical bills.

We also live in a country where the police are (mostly) respected, and are expected to do their jobs (relatively) fairly and with due process... AND if I do have a complaint to make about the police, I am reasonably confident it will be dealt with appropriately. At the very least, I know I can go to my local politician and have my case heard... AND I can send an article to the local papers about it, and will (possibly) get heard/read/published. In my country, I'm not afraid to stand up to law-breakers (including the police!)

AND, in my country, domestic violence is not only a crime, but a social stigma... not a standard practice that gets ignored.

Born in Germany and with European parents but living all but 9 months of my life in Australia I thought it would be cool to own a German passport. I traveled Europe and it would make things a little easier if I did that again. So I thought and was told. I went through the paperwork system requested by the German Embassy who then told me that I would have to renounce my Australian Citizenship to be issued a German Passport.

Game over!

I wouldn't dream of doing that to be German, the land of BMW's and Mercs,so consideration of Chinese citizenship wouldn't even enter my mind!

Nessquick:

basicly, we no need use passport when traveling around Europe, the national ID is enough for police or border check. but  is of course better have passport with you, as in hotels and so on. But i can cross borders with germany ( 5 minit walking from my home ) just with ID card in a pocket, just in case ( otherwise have to pay 20Euro penalty if they check me ). Just show up ur passport and they will say :

Well, welcome and enjoy your time here :-)

What possible benefit could one get from Chinese citizenship, other than possibly alleviating some visa/residence permit issues?  I say possibly because "this is China", where the rule of law is open to a wide range of interpretation and enforcement. Also you'd still be "laowai".

It'd really only make sense if you were either a fugitive in your home country, or if you're coming from another developing country with even worse prospects than China.  Of which I'm neither....so....I'll be keeping my little navy blue booklet angel

even if you could find a small reason to have a chinese passport, they dont legally allow dual citizenship , so its a non starter anyway.
