Q: Is a 1 year residence permit in your passport enough to go through immigration with?
I'm a little confused as to what is the difference between a Z visa and a 1 year residence permit.
Last year I joined a company and before my old Z visda expired in August, they got me a renewed residence permit. The expired visa was in my old passport, and now all my new passport has is a 1 year residence permit. Is that enough to go through immigration with?

If your residence permit is current, and also MULTIENTRY ("M"), or if only one entry and you have never used it yet, yes, it does work like a visa even if in name is a residence permit.
But I strongly advise to get your work visa ("Z") renewed while out, to legally work in China you do need three things, a valid "Z" work visa, a residence permit and a work permit. Get a letter from your employer and do apply for a new visa while abroad at home. Do not settle for less.
Let's be clear here.
A Z visa is rolled over to a residence permit within thirty days of arrival (more or less). At that point in time, the Z visa ceases to exist. It is the residence permit that provides you with the right to work and to remain in China.
You acquires a new passport. The school then renewed your residence permit for one year. The residence permit -- valid for one year -- was placed in your new passport, as it should have been.
Your new residence permit is valid for one year. Your new residence permit permits you egress and ingress from and into China for the duration of the validity of the residence permit.
The poster above that suggested you need a new Z visa was perfectly wrong. The Z visa only is good for thirty days, with one entry into China, and is then supplanted by the residence permit.
In China, no Law or Regulation is cast in iron. It depends on how it is interpreted by different officers in differen regions, and who you know and who "sponsor's" you. And yes, once you enter China, you must report to a PSB office within 30 days of entering and PRIOR to start working, and there get a residence permit and a work permit. Now you are ready to work. THAT IS THE LAW !. But maybe the Law is wrong, or the Officer applying it is interpreting it wrong, or who knows what.
Also, I am not here to argue with "gurus", I only quote the law if I know what I am talking about. But it is up to the reader to pay attention to my words or to someone's else words, makes no difference to me. But I value my stay in China, and DO EVERYTHING behond the call of duty, just in case. And I never suggested he needed a new visa, I said if he was going to be home, it would be a good idea to get it renewed.
