Q: Advice for teaching Western Culture.

So, when I teach about Western culture, I think it's best to willfully ignore those sinful pegan Romans and Greeks (what did they ever do for us? Except leave behind a number of sinful devil-worship temples such as the Parthenon and Pantheon), and the scientific revolution, and enlightenment philosophy, and enginering and all that other satan-trickery, and just mostly focus on Jesus.

I mean end of story right? Western Civilization = Jesus. Has political correctness really run so far amok that anyone could possibly disagree with me? This lunatic fringe I tells ya!

Also, the Jews obviously contributed nothing to Christianity, and thus nothing to western culture. Now excuse me as I go off and enjoy my modern medicine and my Thomas Aquinas.

Heck, if you're going to teach Western Culture, go for the gold and talk about all the stuff that isn't here in China! Like the Rule of Law, Human Rights, being Created Equal, so on and so forth. Just blast away with both barrels!  Talk about eye-poppin', jaw-droppin', knee-knockin' mumbo jumbo; you'll be the man with a thousand "deer in the headlights" looking at ya!

Oops, time to get the proverbial "thumbs down!"

GuilinRaf:

To be honest, I rather liked the imagery, especially of the "thousand deer in the headlights" line!

tell about the Spanish inquistion, the black plague, witch hunts and then try to explain religion. I don't know where the information comes from, but I love reading how the story of Jesus is all wrong.
or tell them what happened after the whites "discovered" the new world.

hey M??? or whoever gives negatives for every post ? do you think you annoy us. I find it funny that you abviously think you can play some sort of game and get at us. I don't understand this, perhaps because i don't have to worry about losing face. This is something you should think about for being so childish and petty. Red is my favourite colour BTW also (:oP````

It sounds like someone is having a BPD (Bad Pagan Day)

As someone who drank way too much vodka once said, "Religion is the opiate of the masses."

Yeah you can teach some southern hospitality and try to use some of it in class. Ask your students to bring in some southern food and have a big feast like the Pilgrims and Indians did.

southern hospitality do you know what that term means?

I may also suggest pointing out that this 'democracy' thing started in Athens about 2500 years ago, and that the Code of Hammurabi had (arguably) fairer, socially responsible and more human laws than China does now... and that was about 3000 years ago.

BTW, you forgot to mention that the Persians gave us arithmetic.. and we're still trying to copy those sinful devil-worshippers' architecture even now (not to mention, still using their evil hedonistic language!)
