Q: Am I the only one who actually eat mooncakes?
On this forum there doesn't appear to be much enthusiasm about them. My Chinese family have so far (in past years too) never been then ones to say "Lets have a slice of mooncake".
I can understand that the health concerns as the calorie count is very high, but there are lots of different kinds, e.g. some filled with nuts instead of sticky stuff and duck eggs.

Few years ago had once white ones which were really good. No idea of the brand/kind, but I didn't have the chance to eat them again so far. Definitely not interested in the ones with the egg yolk in it.
I always end up in having 10 boxes left hanging around the office, sent from suppliers, after all the ones picked up by employees and the ones I try desperately to give away myself.
If there's a things a dearly hate is wasting food. But every year there's no chance with the leftover moon cakes that some wouldn't end up in the trash bin.....

the egg yolk was a surprise the first time, and the fact that "the ones with more yolk are the better ones" is a bit of a head scratcher.
the problem about food as gifts, a lot of it gets wasted. my wife was hospitalized a couple of days last year. each visitor brought a big basket of fruit. Despite me eating 5+ apples per day we ended up throwing out a lot of fruits. It's nice of people to bring gifts, however also extremely insensitive as my wife was actually not able to eat any of it.
There is a baker in Changsha that makes the most delicious moon-cakes. the supermarket ones are horrible in comparison. I'm not in Changsha this year and haven't found a good local baker yet

I wouldn't buy either the ones in supermarkets. Knowing that during mid-autumn day they'll be sold anyway because of the tradition and the love for the easy buck of the manufacturers......
Just to make you enjoy more your moon cakes: one of my suppliers, before moving to a bigger place, had a factory in an industrial park where very different kind of businesses were living together: plastic injection, packaging and blister manufacturers, cheap electronic products, and a small food factory mainly making buns and dumplings. They were almost next door with my supplier. Never seen rats as big as the ones coming out from the building of the food company. Almost cat size.
Didn't even know about egg yolk, so I didn't eat it before and now, with given knowledge I will be eating it even less.
Awful things.

Really disgusting. I used to eat them. I tried like 20 different flavors. In the end, I always wanted to die after each moon cake. Down with this sort of thing.
I was given a mooncake by my girl friend. I bit it but couldn't eat it. I kind of wondered if it was a joke on the foreigner.
I went to Nfld once, car broke down, was talking to the girls in a restaurant about cod tongues, they cooked me one, said I had to eat it, I hate fish -cod yuck. so I cut it up and gaged while eating it, turned out small cod tongues are a delicacy, what they served me was a big fat tough gross thing,,, kinda reminded me of mooncakes.
Last year I was showered with mooncake gift boxes. They were so nicely packaged that I had to try them all. But man, that turned out to be a mistake. They not only tasted old and just wrong, they didn't seem to go off which for pastries, kinda seems wrong. A few months ago I was cleaning out my apartment and found old mooncakes and they were literally still edible. That's just wrong! No but seriously, I find them too heavy and the egg yolk filling is just gross. I'm going to kindly decline mooncakes this year.
I love some mooncakes and really don't like other ones. I typically am not fond of the more bean-paste heavy ones.
I second the "buy from the good local baker". I found one that uses (judging by the taste and texture) real butter, real eggs, real dairy, in their products. The mooncakes are around 10-15 rmb for the 3-inch diameter ones, but well worth it.
I quite like the ones with nuts and seeds inside, but I haven't found any other flavours I like.
I like mooncakes. Starbucks makes great 'Westernized' mooncakes with Westerny flavors. Traditional mooncakes are more hit-and-miss for me, but I still enjoy them.
It took some growing on me, though. My first year in China, I was not crazy about them. And when you factor in the fact that they are usually packaged so beautifully, and taste much 'plainer' than they look--I think that it takes a while for new expats to develop a taste for them.
I love mooncakes, especially with a n ice cup of coffee (except for the meat ones. Cannot choke those down).
Got lots of them this week so I no longer have to worry about breakfast! 
Most people even Chinese don't really like them. There was a survey recently in China that 30% of Chinese would prefer NOT to be given mooncake. I think nowadays it's becoming more of a tradition than anything else.

Yeh, I love all of them, particularly the ones with egg in the middle. All of them except for the ones that taste like dog food. Which is all of them, except for the ones with egg in the middle.

The only ones I really don't mind eating are those with the nutty centre to them, the rest are just like a mouthful of stodge. Pity we have three big boxes of the things this year. I know it is traditional but it amazes me the prices charged for some of the presentation packs, it must put a real strain on the purse strings for some lower income families.

the one with egg yolk are truly disgusting..had to split the whole thing out the first time I ate them..

There is a kind of MOONCAKE stuffed with Meat (鲜肉月饼), so it's a Meat Mooncake...

I really like some o f them, the nut ones are pretty good. I just don't like the lucky dip element to when people offer them to you.
