Q: Annoyed at this is it time to leave?

Right so this happened and I want to share it with you all and get some feedback as perhaps this is one of the straws which is about to break the camel’s back.  My current job I adore and look forward to everyday however years on I want to develop professionally, I need a change and began to look for another part time job to do in the evenings/weekends and there are several language schools constantly seeking teachers and their working times are perfect for me.  I found a ‘reputable language school’ and contacted them, I spoke with the D.O. S lets’ call her ‘Lisa’, she was impressed with my experience/qualifications etc. and asked that I email my credentials which I did and once she assessed everything within a few days she offered me a position with a good salary.  I was communicating with her daily via phone and email, she even offered that once the contract was signed we all go out for dinner to celebrate because that is what they do for new recruits, it sounds good, right?  There was nothing to suggest that there were any issues, the job itself was not a huge deal it was a straight forward job and all above board, HQ was pleased because I have a legit visa, paperwork etc. they would not need to obtain any more paperwork which means saving them money.

Everything was going smooth, I was offered a good position and the main reason I chose to work for Lisa was due to the hours suiting my schedule and I was asked to go to the HQ to formally look at and sign the contract.  I dressed smart, met another teacher in the corridor nice guy from the USA, spoke with a few students who were eating lunch, and sat in the waiting area to meet Lisa.  Within a few minutes of my arrival she appeared, younger than I expected, and this is when it happened, I stood up to greet her, she stared at me up and down and asked if I was ‘Michelle’ which I replied yes and then she told me to sit down and disappeared into another room.  There was no ‘Hello’ or ‘Ni Hao’ a look of dismay was etched on her face but I did notice in her right hand she was holding the new employee contract and welcome pack.

I thought it was odd and another woman appeared (possibly a teaching assistant) clutching a pen and paper who looked nervous, I noticed her hands were shaking, she said that Lisa was ‘a little busy right now’ and she was going conduct a quick interview which I was fine with.  We sat in a room and it was not an interview, just small talk, she had no idea what to say so I lead the conversation which calmed her nerves as her nervousness was making me anxious, I mentioned that I had been invited to the HQ to meet with the D.O.S and this woman just looked at me and said sorry Lisa is busy, her English wasn’t great so I tried not to say too much.  Okay so I didn’t freak out and waited to sign the contract but wait that didn’t happen, after the talk I was told that Lisa would get in touch with me.  A few weeks on Lisa has not been in touch, she has not replied to my emails, telephones calls or other messages I contacted the other contacts such as HQ but they have not replied either.  I got the job when she didn’t see me and then on meeting me she sees a dark-skinned person and cuts me off well I wasn’t going to read too much into it and told a few of my closest friends who being great friends called to enquire about jobs with the company to which she replied asap.  In all honesty, I knew the second she physically saw me what was going through her head, as it isn’t the first time I faced this as it’s a daily experience especially here in China but felt a bit sh** after that and am beginning to think perhaps it is time to move on maybe the change I need is not a new job but to get out for a while.

I waited to write this as I wanted to see if I would receive any replies from HQ or Lisa but nothing, I won’t mention the company or real names as that wouldn’t be fair as I there are negatives and positives everywhere and in everyone but still I felt really cra* after that.  I did have the urge to message her ‘since I didn’t sign the contract can we still all go out for dinner?’  Notice that on meeting Lisa she was holding the new employee contract, the teaching assistant who was ‘interviewing me’ never wrote down anything despite having a pen and piece of paper, in fact she was talking about how hot the weather was these days!!

So, any advice is it time to bid farewell to this land we call the middle kingdom?

What was the heck was this all about?

My recent job experience went something like this and any advice on it would be welcome also I won’t mention names or the organisation therefore will use pseudonyms instead.

Last month I saw a teaching position advertisement and applied as I want a change of scenery, soon enough got a response via email, text and phone call. In a two week period we kept in touch and I sent the required documents and was formally interviewed via the telephone so the manager of the company could hear my native English and long story short I got the job hooray.
Anyway I was invited to come and sign the paperwork at the HQ and the company is legit, the manager Jane also wanted to meet me and made time from her busy schedule so off I went all suited and booted. I went via security the office was very impressive with all the fancy furniture and showy stuff, I even managed to meet a few of the native teachers in the corridor and had the foreign chit chat exchange and was waiting for Jane. Well Jane (youngish female in a designer suit) came in and within a few seconds of looking at me and said “You are Lisa” she turned around, left the room and sent another person to meet me instead. The assistant Rita looked slightly nervous (not sure who she was) we had a good talk and at the end no contract was signed which was odd but Rita said she would get in touch later on as they were incredibly busy and have to draw up individual contract for all the new teachers.

I left the interview and bear in mind everything was going great before meeting Jane in person the company was mighty impressed with all my experience, qualifications and commitment to the job as I have been with my current employer for many years and have progressed quite well on the career ladder. I waited for a week and in the second week I contacted the company for feedback and what the outcome was and now more than four weeks later no response, Jane who was phoning/texting me every second day before meeting me has not been in touch at all and that particular company are still looking for teachers. Now the only thing I didn’t do neither was asked for before the meeting was send a photograph, once Jane heard my native English she didn’t even ask for a photo and directly asked me to visit the HQ to discuss salary, hours etc… Now I am a native speaker and am dark skinned which could be a factor as I found it so offensive that Jane looked at me and turned around within seconds I am not stupid your instincts kick in. So I decided to see if I could suss out what the heck happened, one of my friends contacted Jane for a teaching position and met her who happened to make time for him the next day and basically gave him the job and was going to write up his contract, she was offering him a very lucrative position, he has no teaching experience and is Caucasian. (He didn’t mess the company about and told them that he has another job offer and Jane seemed quite disappointed and told him to ask his friends to join the company oh the irony that I am his friend)

I know this is China and accept warts and all but sometimes these things annoy the heck out of me, everyday in my current job I have to prove myself to parents, managers, others and not to brag but I always win them over because I am damn good at what I do and most importantly I am a good human being. I wanted to go back and see Jane at the HQ but I couldn’t get past security, maybe I am wrong it could be nothing to do with my skin colour maybe it is something else but imagine how you would feel when someone offers you something and takes one look at you and walks away. The worse part for me is that the company/Jane have not contacted me at all not even to say I didn’t get the job Jane if you are reading this then at least let me know that the answer is no for goodness sake!!!!!

Not all spots are like that but there are enough of them to give you a bad feeling about it. You either accept the way thing are or you don't. If you don't, you're not going to have a good time. If you do, you can maybe adjust if your that type of person. It's up to you and how you feel about it in the end.

I read the same story a few months ago. Did you c&p the whole thing and repost it?

If you hold valid RP and FEC, you aren't allowed to work anywhere else than at the School which sponsored your RP. School's name is also written on FEC in Chinese, or in other words 'you are illegal when you moonlight'.

Contract offered by moonlight School is invalid!

If cops come around to your Lisa's job, you will both be disciplined by authorities. Just for your consideration! Before you leave ....

Way to go Icinif. Let's say this is real, China is a racist backwards country. If you can find a way to tolerate it you will have a few (rare) bright moments.

My advice to everyone, in China send a photo to avoid this in the future. Chinese a notorious cowards which is why she couldn't just tell you upfront and also why they're bullying that graduate

icnif77:

How do you mean 'this is real'? It's the same shit posted a year ago with diff. names.

It looks like admin took over some abandoned account and repost the same story with minor changes.

I was waiting for your word on 'Native English with Non-native BA' .... thread. surprise

Might be racist, but they sure want the resources in Africa. Have you noticed how the Chinese are colonizing Africa the same way the Europeans did a few centuries ago? They're are pouring allot of money into the sub Sahara these days.

icnif77:

They're competing with USA in Africa. Chinese are everywhere.... I was screaming at Chinese 'ni shi laowai' in the smallest city in N. Italy last time I was in EU.

How that will all look 100 years from now?
