I have a one year, multpiple entry visa, with a 60 day stay each time. Must I really leave China
- perhaps go to Hong Kong only to come back next day to enter China once more? Could I just
go to the local PSB headquarters and have them 'do whatever is necessary'?

You have to leave. But you don't have to leave for a whole day u can just go into Hong Kong for a few hours and then come back.
Alternatively you could visit, Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan or Pakistan just to name a few.
Rongyu is right. For this kind of visa, you really have to leave. No amount of cigarettes, baijiu or red envelopes can get the public security bureau guy to help you on this one.
Yes you must go out of Mainland, and if you overstay you have to pay 500RMB/DAY up to 5k.
In my case I over-stayed more than 30 days because i was travelling inside China. When i tried to cross to macau (with 5k in my pocket) they didnt let me pass. I had to go to the PSB in Guangzhou, they cancelled my visa and gave me a new 1 month visa... plus a fine of 3k (you can bargain if its your first overstay).
To exit China, come to Xiamen, stay at our hostel, then take the ferry to Kinmen island (Taiwan) it only takes an hour, then come back and you have another 60 days.
