For Western languages a variety of shorthand scripts are available. Is there such a thing for the Chinese language?
If there is such a thing, does anyone have experience with it?

All I know of is the 'simplified Chinese' option when choosing subtitles, but that seems to simply mean 'dumbed down'; i'm not aware of actual Chinese characters being simplified in any way in themselves. If you were to strip away any of the particles or radicals or whatever they're called, I think you'd be left with an entirely different character and meaning.
What we call "simplified Chinese characters" today are in fact the first generation of the simplification. Yes there was a second generation of simplification starting from 1977. It was abolished after 10 years of practice, but still widely used by many people who experienced that time.
