I am going to HongKong for travling after the chinese new year holiday,I only find 2 internatinal hostels on line.Any good tips?I don't wanna spend too much. And where can I buy a HongKong map before I go?Where will be worthy seeing in HK?How much will a normal dinner costes?Besides,I only can speak Madrine and English, will it be a problem for me to talk with people there?
Mandarin still isn't widely spoken, although the numbers who speak it are increasing year on year. If you don't speak Cantonese (Guangdonghua) then you'll need to use your English a lot.
Compared to mainland China HK is very expensive, if you're on a budget eat in the backstreet outlets. Cheap can be found but you have to look and HK cheap is still a lot more than you'll pay in mainland China.
Try Chungking Mansions in Tsim Tsa Tsui. They have a lot of cheap guesthouses. But you do need to know how to bargain there. I stayed there with my boyfriend for one night and the starting prices were all HKD 600-700. In the end, we ended paying HKD 400. After we checked out in the morning, we ran into some other guests and all of them paid different prices, some even paid HKD 800.
Also depends on when you're going, if you're looking for a place to stay on a Friday, it's going to be tough to bargain and even find a place to stay there.
As for sight seeing? Definitely go to the peak in the late afternoon and get a great view of HK in the evening with all the lights. Not so sure about other attractions ( Ocean Park is nice and not so crowded; haven't been to Disneyland cuz I heard the crowds are just crazy (think the ticket price is HKD 500 or something, not sure).
Do some googling and get a feel for what kind of attractions you like. If you like shopping, there's lots to do there.
Have a nice and safe trip!
I have somebody at Chunking Mansion who asked me HKD500 per night in a place that looks like an apartment. Of course I had my own 1 bedroom with bathroom, running hot and cold water and refrigerator. Not to mention the aircon that is vital in HK. I stayed there for 10 days and I liked it because who run the place are very warmth people. Let me know if you want further info and I will provide you with.
BTW: the cheap places to dine is on the HK Mainland. The place to buy electronics is on the Causeway area if I am not wrong. But you can also Google yourself and see plenty of websites that provides with info about where, what and how much to spend. Try Lonely Planet and tripadvisor.com for example.
Hopefuly it helps you.
