Q: Any good training schools or universities to learn Chinese?

Yeah, I am starting to appreciate the Chinese language after my latest business trip where I had absolutely no problems and spoke to a few taxi drivers about the issues of China (trust me, they hate the pollution as much as we do... especially after that documentary). They were long rides from the speed train station to the hotel in town center (45 minutes each way)... and would have been uncomfortable without any conversation.

I want to advance my skills up to a higher level and take the HSK test. I think I am around HSK 3-4 now.

I was looking around on the internet but they are usually extremely expensive (targeting fools outside of China) or looked trashy (targeting foreigners in the locale or already in China that know a 2 week Chinese course IS NOT 4-5 k USD).

So I was wondering if anybody knew of a quality place that offers in-stay with decent prices. I am thinking preferably Xi'an if possible... but any referrals would be nice!

Thanks!

dear Strawberry,

I think I just found the reply to your other question about finding the white husband.

Suggest you reconsider your current approach of 'do not try to do things with any men'... :)

Unless you go of course for white 'wife' :)

Xian is a famous University city. This first link is connected with a University there. But you can check out almost any of them. The less well known the cheaper it is.

The second link is for the english department of the University in your town. You dont gotta leave home if you like.

Many universities offer programs for foreigners to study Chinese. My friend did a semester at BLCU (Beijing Language and Culture University) which is one of the better known ones. Almost all large unis offer this kind of program as far as I'm aware. I did a semester at my local uni. when I first moved to my city to get down the basics.

Well, I believe it pretty much depends on what you want to really achieve in the language proficiency, how much time you intend to invest and how much money you are allocating to it.

In case you want to achieve fluency in the language (written and spoken) so get ready for years of hard work but I assume this you already know as you speak some Chinese at the level that you can more or less converse.

I would recommend following steps:

1) Find some Chinese friends (by friends I mean people to hang out with or talk to) who cannot speak English at all and meet them on frequent basis (ideally daily)

2) Study everyday about 30-60 minutes the characters and few new words

3) Take a course (one to one is the best because it's hard to find students with comparable language level) minimum once a week - if money are not a problem so 3x a week

4) Use Wechat frequently to chat in Chinese - it will improve your understanding of the short written text as well as put you into the touch with common language in easy form

5) Start reading newspapers as long as you get to that level of fluency because Chinese colloquial and official languages differ quite significantly

Doing this for a year will bring you from level 3 to 4-5 (life is not about exam so it's hard to 'translate' your achievement into HKS scheme).

After two years you should not have a big deal to have reasonable conversation on more or less any topic.

If money are the problem so limit the classes to once per week or find some very very good friend who will be willing to overtake a boring job of correcting your pronunciation and grammar (I do not know from where is coming the myth that Chinese has no grammar - I find the grammar quite complicated). But you certainly need somebody to correct you as otherwise it may end up in acquiring the bad habits and mistakes which will be then extremely difficult to correct (I know several self learners who are speaking with certain level of fluency but it's really hard to understand them).
