Q: Any tips for getting over jet lag?

Just flew through 7 time zones yesterday and I'm back at work today. Jet lag is in full effect. and I've noticed the older I get, the worse off it becomes. Anyone have any secret remedies to getting over it faster?

Get more sleep/rest. Drink more fluids and listen to some soothing music.

It depends on the direction I find.

When flyng to HK from Vancouver it seems easier.  I leave at 12pm and arrive at 5pm in HK (12 hour flight).  I stay awake to about 11pm local time and make sure I have enough beers to knock me out when I do and sleep a few extra hours before meetings.

Going back it always seems to hit me harder and last longer (maybe 5 days).  Usually a 8pm HK departure and an 11:00am arrival.

It may have more to do with timing as opposed to direction....btw I can't really sleep on planes.

But in conclusion my best advice is to stay up to the normal hour before sleeping when you arrive...and booze always helps...IMO.

The body adjusts at the rate of one time zone crossed per day.  In other words, if you crossed 7 time zones, then it will your body about 7 days to full recalibrate itself.

There are a few things you can do if you have sufficient advance warning for your trip.

Before leaving:  try moving your body time closer to the new time zone you will be in by advancing or retarding your daily activities by as much as 3 hours for a few days.  This will minimize jet lag upon arrival.

during flight:  drink body fluids (no alcohol what so ever), a d do walk up and don the aisles as much as you can.

after arriving:  do not go to sleep immediately, wait until evening at new locsation to get in bed.

This has helped me minimize jet lag thru my years of traveling, hope it does help you.

I used to fly around the world a lot and it is worse if you are travelling west, or at least I found it was.

If you can the easiest cure is to avoid it by switching to your destination time zone 2 or 3 days before you travel, and 'living' in that time zone. However, for most that is impractical. The next best is to stay awake for a full 24 hours before you fly then sleep on the plane and try and get a flight that arrives at your destination at breakfast time.

Finally the last resort is to arrive at your destination jet lagged, then force yourself to stay awake through a long 18 - 24 hour period, but get to bed about 3 hours before a 'normal' (for your destination) bedtime, then sleep through to a normal awakening time.

I completely agree with the dude.  I hardly sleep on the plane, then just stay awake until my normal sleeping time.  Its not fun but its the quickest way i think

Forcing yourself to stay awake is the only way! It's painful, but gets over it quicker.

Most of the effects provoked by the jet lag is due to a dysfunction of your biological clock, which is normally set according to your daily environment.

So you just need to set back your "clock", especially by making it "feels" when it's night and when it's day. I know that in China it's quite difficult to find it, but the sunlight is an excellent remedy to help your body to be reset. If you don't have sun, then you can use some UV lamps.

Fly the Concorde !   oh, wait, never mind.......   our dumb-ass aviation authorities gave up on actively developing everyday, common-place, affordable,  supersonic commercial air travel.  cool

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
