Q: Any way of solving public transportation problems in China?

Today when traveling on subway queezed between someone's elbow and back I was trying to think is there any way of solving this nightmare of public transportation in China, but all the conclusions that came to my mind don't seem to be good enough: 1.relying on bus transportation would make the air even more polluted, 2.extending subway system-in case of some cities like Beijing it's already very extensive and it takes a lot of time to build, 3.despite attempts of the government it doesn't seem that population of the biggest cities can be stabilized or decrease. Any idea on this issue?

China did try the one child thing to try to control exponential population growth. They were slated for it.

My real answer. Don't live in Beijing. Be green. Live within walking distance of your job. I do. I bought an expensive apartment with the rationale that to buy in a cheaper place in a cheaper area would be detrimental to my well being.

If you cant walk to work you are either working or living in the wrong place.

You're an idiot if you think the problem is with public transportation.

Having people behave in a civilized manner would solve so many problems already.

I find myself almost unable to get out of a jam-packed subway car several times a year. Why? Because the people outside won't wait until the other people got out to try and get in, even when I am standing right in front of the door. I always manage to get out thought, even when facing a wall of people. What do I do when that happens? It's rugby time! I will push the entire pack of incoming people out of the car then go on my merry way. Oh that pisses off a lot of them, I even had people yelling and cursing at me after doing that. But were they to think for a second, it wouldn't happen if they waited until we (me and other passengers on board) got out, before they get in.

Most of the problems with mass transit in China come from people not following the rules. Japan is way more densely populated yet they don't have any of those problems. People will line up there and wait until the other passengers got out before they get in. One at a time, orderly. Same thing in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc...

So people, don't hate me for pushing you out, hate yourself for trying to get in before I got out.

A nice video ad campaign at the stations might work - especially when showing just how polite and civilised the Japanese are...(and what others think of them - versus of mainlanders). Captions like "This is how civilised countries do it".

The bus is actually a really good way to get around in Beijing! I hope the city is going to improve it and perhaps they should make an app that helps you know when your bus is going to arrive because I find that it doesn't run with a precise timetable.

I think they should give their timetable to Baidu Ditu so that you can know when your bus is going to arrive, that would help a lot.

In terms of reducing the pollution, I think taking the bus is actually a really good solution for the moment if people use them instead of their cars, but it has to be a collective effort!

The subway in Beijing is not great because you can't find stations very close to where you are most of the time and have to walk pretty far to get to one... They should consider putting more stations in empty areas where there are none but that will be such huge construction works that I don't know if I want that... Also that won't really help reduce the air pollution... Beijing is just too big...

The subway itself though is awesome: clean, fast, and secure!
