In one class: Eternal Dawn
In the same class: a guy called Happy, another called Sad
In another: Rainbow
Even some of the younger Chinese English teachers chose 'wisely'. I did a double-take when one of them introduced herself as 'Apple'
12 years 24 weeks ago in Teaching & Learning - China
Some boy names: Endless Night, Hulk (and he was 156cm tall), Jizz, Veedee(VD), Hymen
Girl names: Easy, Twink, Taint, Poopy, Lawanda
On a sidenote, everytime I encounter a student with an English name referring to "intelligence", these students are the most idiotic: Smart, Genius, Brain, and Einstein were some of the dumbest students I've had.
markferrer:
Where I come from, Atlanta, Lawanda is a real common name
"Racecar", "Handsome", "Spiderman" (both adults), "Lady Gaga" (a *hilarious* thirty-something guy, aka "Santa Crau" aka "Michael Jackson"), "Caca" seems extremly popular, and a five year-old named "Cock". I'm glad he was the other foreign teacher's student, as that teacher and most of the Chinese teachers would fight Cock's dad over that name daily, but he absolutely refused. It was based on his zodiac sign. :(
No students, but employees:
Anubis - Yes, he knew exactly what it meant
Chain
and my personal favorite...
Stop Sign
I've met Icecream (female), Apple (male & female), Cobra, Century, Rocky, Rambo.
I love this country's people!!!!! hahaha
A couple "Coral" and "Reef"
Coworkers "Idol" and "Lord" and "Jimbo"
The basic nature names "Stream" "Rock" "Sky" "Cherry"
Ghost (my male boss). Milky, Habby (who explained it as a mix between happy and hobby), and a young student who wanted to be named "sports", but I convinced him to go with Alex instead. Also, Columbia (male).
Ghost was the absolute first person I met in China, straight off the plane. When he said his name, I thought he was giving me some online handle of his.
tmestep8:
Oh, also a girl named Oliver (I believe a mistranslation of Popeye's Olive Oyl).
You guys beat me :(
I've known a few 'Apples' - all girls, as well as a couple of 'Cherry's, a girl called 'Happy'...
2 boys who sat next to each other - 'Ice-cream' and 'Watermelon'.. behind them sat 'Chocolate' and yeah, they knew what they meant... cos I'd use the Chinese words for it.
I've also got a girl called 'Eternal'.
'Eleven' and 'Seven'.
I still call 'Rabbit' and 'Sail' by their first choice, even though they've changed it.
One girl wanted to be 'Fanny' - til I suggested otherwise (fortunately, a couple of days later, I remembered the American meaning of that word... made it easier to explain why not to have it )
A guy called 'Star', who sat with 'Style'.
And, one of the first people I met here was 'Bufflet'.... what wanted to be named after the (then) richest man in the world... (too bad he mispelled it!)
FTR, I've given a few 'odd' names... 'Sapphire' (too many 'Ruby's around...) and 'Arwen' (too many 'Wendy's around as well...) - they're in the same class as 'Fairy'.
And, of course, 'Taffy'.
Now, I've got 'Shy' (and everytime I hear him speak in Chinese, I suggest he change his name to 'Embarrassed'.. besides, he supports Arsenal!) And one guy wanted to be 'Bone'. They're in the same class as 'Stay' and 'Armani'.
(I'm loving 'Stop sign'!!!)
I knew a girl who dealt with international clients who's English name was Superman. Yes, a girl.
A little boy named "elephant". I asked the parents why they chose that name.
They said "because an elephant is big and strong"
A college girl named "octopus". That's a direct translation of her Chinese name.
A couple high school kids sitting side by side named "Tom & Jerry"
In my office there is a girl called "Milk" another called "Wasabi".
on the email list there is "Firey", "Icey"
I know others called "Teenie", "yoyo" "Leaf" "Silky" and "Fancy" and "Sunny"
not too bad really.
Im loving stop sign though

I love it when they say, my name is blue, cause I like blue

yes lot of my students has strange name for example: zero, salt, many, horrible, alsation etc heheheheh
Candy, Cinnamon, Chaos, Drew, Liono, Patrice, Harry, Lupus. I want to know what kinds of name books these people were looking at.
One of my student's names is Myway. She made it up herself.
I think the worst is Doraemon. It's a girl. She chose that name because she really likes the Japanese cartoon.
I taught here 18 years ago and it sounds like names haven't changed much. Some of the good ones I remember are Rock, God, Smiling, and Kicking Bird(who really did look like an American Indian).
Allan
Windsor
Winter
Elaine
Joyce
Orange
Kanye
Ace
Shining_brow:
What's wrong with Elaine or Joyce?? Or Windsor, for that matter??
I also used to work with a guy who's English name was Hitler. I kept trying to explain why it was a bad name but it was like talking to a wall.
Another guy's Chinese name was Wei Bo Lu, so he chose the English name Microwave, which I guess makes sense.
Others:
Smell-Smell, Kinky, Coffee, Elite, Forp (no idea), Garlic, Hammer, Sword, and perhaps my all time favorite: Happy Beef.
To be fair, I should point out that it goes both ways.
I chose my Chinese name 火山 (huo shan), because the characters are easy to write.
It means "volcano", so I'm sure I deserve some teasing by Chinese people for that.
I am chatting right now with a student named "Bouyant". She likes the meaning and the sound of the word.
Stop Sign and Happy Beef are my favorite!
I too had a "Kinky" in my class and another called Trouble.
I also had a student who insisted in calling himself "Satan" until I finally convinced him to change it. He did: To "Lucifer". He was the first student I insisted in using his Chinese name.
I had Merry (a boy, loved Lord of the Rings) Gifty, Gonner, Bony (not Bonnie), 300,. Panda ( a girl) Panda (a boy), Cuddles, Snoopy,. Heidy ( a boy) and Pimp.
I have also had the more common Snow, Apple, Rain, Michael, etc.
My favorite: Trouble.
Not students,but coworkers.

I also know a boy called 'Sunshine'. And another called 'Scoffield', like the Prison Break character.
