Q: Any of your students have hilarious English names?

In one class: Eternal Dawn
In the same class: a guy called Happy, another called Sad
In another: Rainbow

Even some of the younger Chinese English teachers chose 'wisely'. I did a double-take when one of them introduced herself as 'Apple'

Some boy names: Endless Night, Hulk (and he was 156cm tall), Jizz, Veedee(VD), Hymen

Girl names: Easy, Twink, Taint, Poopy, Lawanda

On a sidenote, everytime I encounter a student with an English name referring to "intelligence", these students are the most idiotic: Smart, Genius, Brain, and Einstein were some of the dumbest students I've had.

markferrer:

Where I come from, Atlanta, Lawanda is a real common name

For girls, "Monkey," "Blue," and "Silence." One girl had the name Zhou Zhou, and she applied it in English as "Jo Jo."

For the boys, "Echo," "Wind," and "King."

We always say the Chinese lack imagination and creativity in our English classes and it's difficult to get them to think outside the box. However, when it comes to their adopted English names there is, at least, a trickle of creative juices apparent. I don't like boys who take on feminine names like Honey for obvious reasons. On a positive note......if you stood in front of all your school students and asked Amy to come forward you would get 20% of the girls marching towards you. Ask for Lucy to come forward and you get another 20%. Coco's and Yo Yo's will get you another 15%. So, calling out Kinky, Stop Sign and Condom would be nice knowing that just the one individual will step forward!!

Students, colleagues, bosses...

City
Cigar
Wonderful (a man)
Sunlight (a man)
Funny
W.C.
Ironman
Number 1 (he changed that... to Rocky)
C
Balance
Streetfighter

I also know a guy who had to give names to a class of kids. He just called them after his mates back home. They ended up having names like Daz, Jez and Gaz. A bit wrong, really.

I agree about it working both ways too. One Western friend who does kung fu gave himself the Chinese name Bai Hu. Another is known as Da Jiao on account of his size 12 feet. To Chinese people, White Tiger and Bigfoot are very odd names.

markferrer:

I'm a foot size 13 USA / 48 Euro. I think I'll change my name to Da Jiao too.

One of the students at the school was given the 'English' name Do Do.

When I pointed out that this is not in fact an English name, the local staff member who gave him the name said: "yes, I know, it's Russian."

mattaya:

That's weird I knew of a girl who's name was Do Do....I never new this was a Russian name! Hi MissA!

I had a girl called Empty, a lovely girl and she just liked the word.  A boy called Satan, who was a terrific kid, very kind hearted and wanted to be different.  Another unusual name I saw recently was Snowly!  I am still wondering if she meant Slowly

Names for little kids at my part time job: Boots, Chilly (she walks like a penguin, and doesn't talk much, so it's fitting), Toto, Quana (not sure if there is a "u" or not, but you know it's not an English name when you have to ask how to pronounce it).

The "leader" of the English Club at the university here has an interesting name: Donald Trump...yes, and when he introduces himself he uses both the first and last name, all the time.

And to add to that, the vice president goes by the moniker, Forrest Gump.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
