Q: Anyone living in or near Shenzhen?

I might have a teaching job there next term. I was wondering what people thought of the city, the people, cost of living, and quality of life there. I would be working out near the airport area I think. It would definitely not be in the city limits.

I live in shenzhen, is it just OK. Where you choose to live will be of the utmost importance.

Although shenzhen is in Guangdong you will find faaar fewer cantonese people here. The majority being migrant workers from hunan. These people are even worse than the people in actual hunan!

So you need to find an area that is a little older filled with locals or at the very least people who have been here a long time.

The city centers get really expensive but transportation from most places is quite good. If you are near the airport you are in Baoan. You can easily find foreigner friendly places nearby.

Quality of life depends on you. You have all the options here so you can pay a fortune or nothing on everything.
HK is super convenient and transportation to other provinces / countries is cheap and easy. But because of the huge number of migrant workers. Tickets are hard to get and expensive during holidays.

There's really not much to do in Shenzhen, and the airport is pretty far from the city center. If you require import foreign goods and cleanliness, you might not enjoy that area much. However if you're fine eating like a local and can accept the typical Chinese dirty streets, you can make it work. And Hong Kong is just across the border for a nice day trip on the weekends.
