Q: Anyone tried a decent Chinese wine?

Most Chinese wine I've tried has been pretty gross, but there must be some good ones right? Everyone talks about how Xinjiang is famous for its amazing grapes so maybe they have good wine?

some of the pricier bottles of Great Wall are ok. But then we are at a price where imported French or Australian wine is a better choice. The nicest bottle of Great Wall I've had, I honestly was thinking that, if they fake 75% of the French wine sold in China, then perhaps they'd also import some genuine French wine and stick Great Wall labels on, just to save face for the wine industry.

I had the chance to taste a variety of Chinese wines during the years, from 20 rmb/bottle to several hundred ones. All tasteless, perfumeless, soulless. All in all, the only one I remember as barely barely drinkable was a 27 rmb/bottle 2007 Great Wall Cabernet Sauvignon I used to purchase sometimes in 2008/9 in RTMart.

yeah I agree it is generally like childrens grape lemonade. Especially for someone like me who is really in to the great Itlians, like Brunello and Barollo.

Wine in China isn't bottled by provinces as 'Xinjiang wine', but by 'Great Wall' and another few Co. names.

Wine labels text is in Chinese only, so beside alcohol % can't really tell where the wine/grapes comes from.

For 100 RMB, you get good Italian, Chilian, Australian, French wine, with a good diversity of tastes. Right now, I'm sipping an imported Moscato : 105 RMB. The price is reasonable for the quality, I never had a bad surprise.

Xinjiang grapes rocks, indeed. Wine, I didn't try. With the sugar content of those grapes, it can be make for something strong yet sweet. The few red local wines I tried (at weddings) were ...not very good... it's on par with the lowest grade you can buy back home.

I bought yesterday Maisisemo, Italian red with rubber cork for 48 Rmb, maybe Sicilian or from Napoli. It's so so. When corked with rubber, can't be really good.

In my Jianou, we sellCarlo Rossi, California red, 1.5 l bottle 'corked' with screw cap for 105 ('ebay five' in pinjin), table wine for cooking and drinking with ice. You know the procedure!

Italian wines you can buy here for 100-150 rmb/bottle are 3-4 Euro regular very decent supermarket ones, back home. Most of them are just fine for me, moreover considering I like young, fruity wines, which here are cheaper.

Yes, they like to stick big Rmb price on it, if wine is from sunny Italy or Cote d' Azur. California table wine is pricey too.

The best ones are the ones that come in a huge bottle for about 20 kuai. They taste like piss but if you keep drinking you get so drunk it starts to taste ok. And its only 20 kuai.

Why, WHY insisting in producing wine in China for Christ's sake.....

DrMonkey:

Well, they can, they have excellent grape in Xinjiang. But wine does not forgive sloppiness and corner-cutting.

I'm just waiting now to read somewhere that China has 2000 years of history as wine maker. It would pair the 100 years of experience in developing cars I recently read on China Daily BS.

C'mon DrM. You're French, I'm Italian, we both know what we're talking about....

I worry, if they get too close to Austrians, and start making champagne with antifreezesurprise

Austrians are good skiers, 'cause they live in Alps, but people were dying some 20Y ago, while drinking bottle of 'sweet'

I like my vintage Sprite mixed with a little wine now and then...

DrMonkey:

Back in the early 2000's, I was watching with my parents a TV documentary about the new trends in a China. They showed a Auchan supermarket, with a manager explaining that they were trying to sell red wine, but it wasn't very successful. So they sold packs of one bottle of wine with one bottle of Sprite. People would buy a pack, mix the two, and drink that. Great success ! My parents and I were horrified, we wanted to scream, yell, but we couldn't. We are still talking about it sometime. What have been seen can not be unseen.

I had one which I swear could have been used as a highly effective engine lubricant.

Yeah, sometimes my wife's complaints are pretty decent. I once tried them on others and they worked.

You are looking for a good Chinese grape wine. That is like looking for a good true Mexican restaurant outside of Beijing and Shanghai. Just drink Shaoxing Huangjiu.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
