Q: Apart from football, what else is the Bird's Nest used for?

I mean it seems like a huge waste of time and money the fact that it's barely used since the Olympics (except for tourism). I know they have the occasional friendly in the summer when Premier League teams tour etc, but what else is it used for?

nothing much http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing_National_Stadium#Post-Olympics

I like the "Due to a lack of use, paint is already peeling in some areas" comment. Not unique to the Birds Nest. Happens on pretty much any building in China starting from the second the paint is dry.

Scandinavian:

this Bloomberg story from last year points out that the pre-Olympic planning, or lack of, means that most Olympic facilities, not just eh Birds Nest are in disrepair.

A pity, really.  The Birds Nest is just the latest example of what is referred to in the sporting world as a "white elephant" or a burdensome sports facility whose construction and ongoing maintenance costs are way out of proportion to its usefulness and worth today.  Seems every Olympic host city I've been to has a similar problem.  Sydney built an awesome stadium way out in an abattoir in a backwater called Homebush Bay.  Not sure what it's used for today, but it lay dormant for a number of years.

Atlanta built a new stadium, tore down a third or more of it after the Olympics, and now it is home to the Atlanta Braves.  Okay.  Good call.

But look around and you'll see Olympic Stadiums peeling, cracking, chipping, eroding, etc. everywhere in the world.

Multipurpose use is the key: concerts, sports events (amateur & professional), trade shows & conventions, flea markets, political & religious rallies (oh... wait... where am I...), and any number of creative purposes to turn a buck and pay the bills.

They secretly execute failed wumaos there, in the wee small hours of the morning. That's what happened to Mattaya and 981. They run on the running track, and the army gets moving target practice.

Be afraid, Silva. Be very afraid...

sadWhen it snows they turn it into a snow park. They put rides up and have different things set up for you to play. They did that last year I believe. They also set something up right behind the birds nest last year also. They've already turned the watercube into a water park(Drunk!

He he, I said: "year"!

I drove by it on my tour, didn't stop to see it. They told me Sparkey lives in one of the doorways.

Yes, it is right by entrance 1F. I think it means he is making a killing on the wumaoing as it is very close to the crapper. Not too shabby at all.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
