This question has been beaten to death around here.  It seems to be discussed every three-or-four days.  Just look at all of the old threads.  Everyone knows the answer for sure!

Are they racist? Yes, many of them.

I'll assume you're talking about ESL based teaching jobs.

What are they thinking? Well, I know the logic for teachers of children all too well and the thought process is not nice. They think that native English speakers are the 'best' teachers. They're also thinking that all 'real' native English speakers are white, and as they want the 'best' for their little precious Leos, Tigers, Yoyos and Cocos, then they should only let the forementioned precious little snowflakes be taught by caucasians.

It's idiotic and flat out wrong, but that is the thought process.

Well said MissA! Yes, MANY of them..just like South Koreans!!!!!

Incredibly. ANd they love to accuse other people of it all the time. Not because they actualy care, but because they know others do and so there's a card to be played in a dispute.

My favourite is the BC mine owned in part by the Chinese government where they are trying to only hire Chinese. So a local union makes and issue out of it and one of the Chinese miners files a human rights complaint! It's LAUGHABLE. (Echinacities took down the article when I posted it, BTW).

But, hey, it's nice to see China concerned about human rights for a change!

To " 981977405" People keep asking the same question just because sometimes it's insulting, and you just feel bad for yourself when you are black and looking for a job! But nothing can be done against it, life is full of things like this and even worst....

Scandinavian:

what do you mean nothing can be done about it. it is just a matter of education, helping people get the knowledge and exposure that is required to not be such idiots

If you say Chinese are Racist...Then i think they see black people mainly from Africa and they have less knowledge that black people also live in Europe and America..

But also, If Chinese people thinks that black people only come from Africa then:

- why Drogba from Ivory Coast is highly paid by Shanghai Shenhua..

-  why China announced 2 Billion USD aid to 50 African Countries..

- Why China's business with Africa is 166 Billion USD in 2011

- Why almost all the IT, Infrastructure and Telecom projects are being done by Chinese Companies..in Africa

- Why in so many African countries, Chinese population is just next to local population

Sidi:

Let me just say that you don't know much about Africa, you only hear about it from the news. Let me tell you what's happening, the scramble for Africa is still ongoing, especially for it's minerals, Africa produces a lot of raw materials and of course processed in 'developed' countries, but the 'business' that China gets out of Africa is amazing, so China gets a lot of money out African countries in the business sense. China doesn't give things away for free, it's give and take. And the infrastructures you are talking about are PAID for= business for Chinese, and there is outrage in Africa right now because what happens is that the Chinese contractors bribe officials to get huge construction projects, of which the governments obviously use state money to pay for and the buildings almost collapse with in short periods. So that's what's happening. Those things are paid for. And also research on how some Chinese are exploiting Africa's minerals..

By the way I don't know which part of Africa you are talking about as you may or may not know Africa is made up of many countries. And also, not all Chinese have the exploiting capitalist characteristic, and not all Chinese are racist, people are just different just that the majority tend to paint the rest. Just wanted to let you know of what's going on, as a person that knows first-hand. I must say though through the Chinese highly censored media the government denies its people international knowledge as it manifests itself by people only thinking that 'black' people are black and dark from a 'dark Africa', but, I personally feel that the Chinese government (excluding the businessmen) have good international relation skills, excluding the business practices.. For example; the island issue, I read an article where Chinese citizens were saying China has technology and ammunition but doesn't use it, clearly this wouldn't be a wise international relation move as yes, internationally I think China gets unfairly beaten down, it's closely watched, just read any article written in America about China and what local American people think of China. I am using this example because China idolises Americans, Americans think Chinese are........ but then, the Chinese local people (not the government) treat Africans like.....you know....so actually the racism that Africans get here is not as bad as the international labeling that China gets.

Mimy, those are good points for sure and I do sympathize with you.  If you check the Internet, however, before you come to China, you would quickly really the problems involved with the employment of blacks here in China.  Things around here are going from bad-to-worse not the opposite, I hate to say.  If you are a black American, then at leas the passport will open a goodly number of doors.  If you are an African, then for sure it is going to be a difficult trek.  In the city where I live in Northeastern China, the PSB have taken to not renewing any of the Z visas of the black foreign teachers, even when the employers sought renewal.  In the city where I live, the black population of foreign teachers has dropped to one.

nevermind:

See, according to 981 it's your fault for being black. Second time I posted this, Admin of course sided witht he wu mao and took it down before.

As MissA has mentioned, for ESL jobs, one must be from the 'Big 5 - U.K, Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the U.S' to be legally employed. Being white, regardless of education, ability to teach, or psychological problems, is the primary requirement. That won't change any time soon and that's just the way of things.

I do have a very old friend from Canada who is black and runs a very successful interior design business in Shanghai. He built himself a successful business rather than playing the victim when faced with racism, discrimination or purely ignorant attitudes.

Rather than trying to prove that China is racist, discriminatory against the young/old, homophobic, etc., prove that you have the drive and determination to overcome the odds.

boomsticks:

Hey Sinobear, good points.  Just one observation though, concerning the 'big 5' issue. This varies as far as I can tell.  Many job ads point to '7' instead, which include Ireland and South Africa.  I myself am Irish and have never had any trouble getting legally employed here, first as a training school teacher and now in an office job.

Beiing has recently taken to sending its SAFEA emissaries out to the provinces to organize a series of meetings concurrently with the PSB and the local FEC's concerning the employment of foreign teachers.  From what I have been told, they have been stressing again the requirement to hire from the Big 5 countries; for those schools that cannot find Big 5 applicants, than the second choice are those teachers from the Philippines; nonetheless, they have been stressing that certain countries are off-limits and I'll let you guess which countries.
