Q: Are Chinese right in saying the world discriminates against them?

Anyone who's been here long enough knows Chinese have a small minority complex vis a vis foreigners. They really shouldn't, but whatever, that's another debate.

Anyways, after the Olympics, Chinese bloggers pointed the finger at a number of injustices and cases of discrimination against Chinese athletes (and thereby Chinese people in general), and found the underlying cause for this: Chinese people are not popular/liked on the international stage. The world (especially the Western world) does not like them.  They also point to the discrimination perpetrated by Hong Kongers against mainland tourists, or to the events that took place in the South China Sea.

The line is very blurred when it comes to distinguishing country/government/people, and they seem to blend everything into one, which is, in my opinion, their big mistake. Most people in the States or in Europe don't know real Chinese, and so probably don't care either way. Such extreme accusations coming from the Chinese won't really help their case, though.

Passing the buck or deflecting blame is a skill that many Chinese have cultivated over "5000 years history". It's evident in my daily life so I guess it's to be expected that they would toss the blame on the international stage when they don't perform well. Imo, their biggest problem is that many of them don't see shades of grey...it's all black or white, win or lose, good or bad, yes or no. I hope you get my drift here. I have never seen a country that will so blatantly defend itself in the face of such obvious nonsense.

China discriminates against all foreigners...weither you are white. black, yellow or whatever your skin complexion is ...you still be called 'Laowei' or 'weiguo ren'..........We will never be a part of this society whatever we do.......I guess am being fair cause each single person who lives here {not a chinese} experiences this almost everyday of his life here...

siyingyuan:

hmmm, wonder what do you expect to be called? foreigner? most Chinese don't speak English.

I've been called foreign student, when I studied in Canada, and I don't see why there's any problem with it, because I was a foreign student.

interesting enough, I felt the same, no matter what I did I will never blend in, for many years living in Canada. That's because my way of thinking, my habit, my entire history has been different from them. I started to feel more blend in after, now 9 years of living here, but still I know I am different, which is fine. And after all, China is not a multicultural country, unlike Canada (and I live in Vancouver, the one of the most multicultural city in Canada). Sometimes, you just have to let things go.

I'm with Createach.  I understand people in China think people from other places are "different".  Which is why they are "ta" while we are "laowai" or "wei guo ren"  It's just like say "you people" or "your people".  It's offensive Aren't we all JUST people?  Why the need for the separation? Are we all so different?  Every country I have been to is the same.  People love their family and friends.  If they have money they're happy, if they don't they're not.  It's like that everywhere I go.  People are people, regardless of country.  No need for so many words.

Who cares if China is being portrayed differently in media outlets. China should care about what is happening in its own country.

Does Australia care what other countries say about the issues of Asylum seekers not really.

Does Japan or Norway care about what other countries say about there whaling program not really.

Does USA care about what other countries say about there involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan not really.

Does North Korea care about what other countries say about there dictatorship not really.

China needs to stop caring about what countries and media outlet says about them and focus on the inside of the country not what other people say about them.

ChinaVipEnglish:

They have the reputation they earned as flagrant IP thieves and cheaters. This is WHY they are discriminated against - NOBODY likes nor trusts cheaters and China has so many of them that even a website was devoted to them at www.CleverChinaCheater.blogspot.com  Americans have a reputation for being bullies and we have to live with that label. Chinese have to learn to live with the label they gave themselves as well.

The government ministry of truth ensures they continually feel this discrimination. It's part of an "Us Vs. Them" strategy that the party uses to help justify all it does and deflect any blame by having people conditioned to blame the other nations picking China.

You know who takes alot of grief internationally? Fillipinos, sikhs and Arabs. But they don't complain HALF as much as Chinese do.

Victim mentality which has been bred into them since the end of the Opium Wars. That's part of the problem. The other part is that they care too much. Another issue is that some of the criticism is deserved but because Chinese people rarely hear the full truth, they take it as a personal slight to their country.

One example of that is the suspicions faced by the Chinese swimmer girl in the Olympics. Most Chinese are unaware that China has been making athletes use steroids for the last 30 years or so. When looking at the issue in context, foreign suspicion is warranted.

nevermind:

yeah, something like 50 athletes in 10 yers busted for steriods and they have the gall to get upset when people suggest they could be doing it again?

The world discriminates against them, yes. But only because of the reputation they built themselves.

As for them, they discriminate against everyone that is not chinese, or that is a lower class citizen. As nevermind said, its the "Us vs Them" idea that spills over into everything, from trivial shit like "ohh really, you have rice in your home country?!?!" to hardcore shit "you are only here to treat our girls like whores and destroy our culture."

Non-discrimination is based on respect for others, which is a two way street.

Have to agree with some of the comments here - China needs to spend far less time worrying about what it believes the world thinks about China or Chinese. The rest of the world is not going to organize it's lives on how it thinks its status is being viewed by someone else. China should not either.

One reason Chinese Olympians are not so beloved? It's not because they are Chinese 'per se' but it's because the Chinese Olympic program is run like an Cyborg science experiment so obsessed with racking up gold medals with its robots that it seems to have zero sense of fun, excitement and this strange concept of 'Good Sportsmanship' which, believe it or not, is actually more than 'diligently ensuring no rules were broken'. (although that is a good quality too).

I mean would it kill one Chinese Olympian to smile and joke around a little? Heck.. even former Soviety athletes are doing it now. I saw a Romanian hug someone!

And then here is the next thing. Did you know OTHER athletes were in highly controversial rulings?

Seriously. It was not only Chinese athletes. Some from South Korea were 'robbed' or lost medals in questionable judging scores.

Did China see Canada's women's soccer team pretty much openly robbed by a Referee?

Oh right. Well you know we just need to go on about China being victimized and why is China victimized? Did you see what they did to China? Why is it only China getting bad decisions here?

No. Other countries did too. China was not special.

I think the world does indeed discriminate against Chinese because they have acquired a horrible reputation for copying and cheating.  If they want respect they need to earn it by prosecuting cheaters and IP thieves!

Wow! A miracle. You didn't mention your cleavercheatingChinacheaterswhoarecleaver website in this post. I guess you used your other accounts for that after tacking on your plug on the most popular post here.

chinese discriminate against their own, so a chinese person who was born and raised in a english speaking country will have a hard time finding a job a  teacher for the fact that chinese have hard time picturing an asian face with an english accent,

yes its true everyone picks on china, but so many other countries get picked by the media

first you gotta sort out your own problems before you try and tackle the media

Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
