A good friend of mine and my wife's asked if I would pledge my daughter, who isn't even a year old, to her son of the same age.
Why?
I said, "That's their decision, not ours," but she kept insisting. I didn't have the heart to tell her that I'm afraid her son is going to grow up to be a misogynist-hooker-chasing-wife-beater, and that I still was very unlikely to approve even if he wasn't.
She wasn't kidding. She really wanted me to save my daughter for her son. How common is this?

According to my experience still pretty common in Indonesia, and IMO still pretty common in Asia I think, especially from a family with strong traditional background (some still celebrate old stuff and perhaps rituals too) and traditional cities. But yea its really creepy, if she keep insisting perhaps get a new friend.
what kind of dowry were they willing to put down for your daughter, maybe you should say "Yes, but it will be <big amount> + <lots of property> + an iPhone 23S"
It is pretty messed up that people have so little respect for their own offspring, but they don't, just look at the amount of kids hanging out of car windows, not strapped in whatsoever, people in China don't love their children OR people in China are severely under-educated, make your pick.

They are actually pretty rich. Unfortunately for them, the Care Factory has currently closed due to excessive pollution.
That was quite common in India, Pakistan and specifically Afghanistan but by now things have changed in the former two countries as there are laws provisioned to stop this nonsense but is still happening in Afghanistan. This is for the first time I heard of this in China. I didn't know that before.

Pretty old news, but let this be exhibit A :http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/23/chinese-mother-posts-nude_n_827147.html
Of course its not the only one, other practices although perhaps less excessive or out of media coverage still happens in here even today, especially in big cities. Just ask around for some square/广场 or gathering spots for parents looking for in laws. Or just maybe read Chinese newspaper sometimes such advertisement/news are there.

In china, two people are free to get married ,when they reach the legal age of marriage.
that situation in china is very rare nowadays.
Child marriages were quite common in Asia during olden times. Today, certain parts of the subcontinent still have this practice. Some time back, a child was betrothed to a 40 year old man. The child died after her first night of marriage. You can only imagine how she died. The next day, the man was nonchalant about it while the bereaved family went about with the funeral for the child. It's amazing some cultures still practice such crazy customs.
