ok I've seen and read about children doing their business on streets, planes, trains, malls....everywhere
so, why don't chinese people use diapers?
Cost to much....They go for that open pants thing that they can just let loose wherever. I saw an episode of shark tank also Dr. PHil and buying diapers yearly for parents is very expensive....I think that's the reason.
seems there are not many local producers of diapers. Only saw the german "Pampers" which is already expensive but good in germany. I think for 10 you pay like 100 rmb. now think how many you need a day? 3-4?
now think how much chinese earn every month. Guess you pay 3000+ RMB a month for diapers

Not really. You can find easily Pampers, Huggies, Merries (the best ones and the most expensive), plus some local chinese brands, basically in every supermarket. And they do not cost that much. Go with top of the line, you can buy 48-56pcs pack for 100-130rmb.
Based on the brands cost average for 1 to 2 rmb/pc. And you actually need them extensively (8-10pcs/day) only in the first 3-4 months. After that, if you're at home, you can begin training your kid to piss in the toilet (and to poo too). You should remember to do it often tough (not more than 30min intervals between one shot and the next). Beside being better for the kid as you keep his delicate skin breathing, it makes the use of diapers needed only during night time and WHEN YOU GO OUT (!!!!!!!), reducing sharply the overall cost of them (3-4 per day could be enough).
They are still considered expensive to the average household. I know working with some middle class parents they have their children wear diapers, and most of them import from Hong Kong, if they can, or buy the international brand like Pampers. If you are still down towards the poverty line, diapers are still considered an unnecessary expense, and all the old people were brought up never using a diaper on their children ever. It's a generational thing, in a few years it will become more and more common.

Agree.
Anyway, I can see plenty of people having enough to own and drive a car, and still their grandma pissing the kid in the middle of the street. Oh wait, forgot........ car is a much needed good to show off and be accepted in the society, diapers aren't.

Yes, also think about how often Chinese always listen to their elders. Telling their grandchildren who they are allowed to marry, what they must have, or have not, telling them lots of silly superstitions and things they should look out for. Buying diapers is surely not on the list that Grandma and the other elders go to buy at the store when their daughter is expecting. I can guarantee a lot of Grandma's would throw out a box of diapers if they found their son or daughter using them for their child, thinking they are just a waste of money.
