... in the olden days divorce was a great shame to families ... so they said. Does this so-old-fashioned view still
persist in China? As most know in modern western countries, divorced women are pretty well looked after by the society ..., but in China is the situation entirely different?
So, are divorced women still deemed a 2nd class citizen in old(rural)/new(city) China?
I'm doing a survey ...
They're still shunned for example they can't go "home" the first day of Chinese new year, some idiotic crap about bringing bad luck to the family, both the woman and family loose face (regardless the reason why they divorce, the woman should do ANYTHING to keep the family together... Stone aged idiots)... When someone dies in the family the woman can't be around for it as it brings bad luck... She is also not to live in the village buy a house or land in the home village as again she'll bring bad luck... Chinese men are smart enough to subjugate their women...
JayKnox:
I agree with most of that - and its still a real issue especially with some villagers I"m familiar with,
but
"Chinese men are smart enough to subjugate their women" ???
I think you mean to say Chinese men are subjugate TO their women yes?
All I see are bossy wives towing their subjugated obedient husbands around.
(granted, he's a renegade sultan AWAY from his wife at the business dinner).
I dunno.. I'm mainly familiar with northern China and people tell me its actually WORSE (if that was possible) south in Shanghai where men are groveling eunichs to their contemptuous empress wives?
yes but that is great for a guy like me because when they get used to my first class treatment of them it becomes their drug of choice. but then they want children and marriage and dont know how to accept the fact that it is over.
@njord, points taken ... and you used present tense so i assume they still believe in
those craps ... but is this still prevailing?
"When someone dies in the family the woman can't be around for it as it brings bad luck"
But someone ALREADY died!
Screw that, more divorcee poon for the rest of us. (If I weren't married)
Yes it's like that today (in the countryside) and smaller cities
