Q: Are Dog sleeping pills a thing?

So I'm dog-sitting a very nervous yappy dog over CNY in Beijing. I know it's going to freak out during the fireworks and I actually know nothing about dogs so I'm at a bit of a loss. Do any of you have pets? What do you do during CNY.

Can I give it a sedative or is that really cruel?

Don't give a sedative. What a dog needs is to feel safe. Show the dog that everything is OK but just being normal. Play with the dog, give it some food, and try to go for some good walks during times of day when there is not a lot of fireworks going on.

Dog react differently to things like this. Our dog prefers to hide under our bed, previous dogs had a heightened need for being petted.

The owner must have some input as to how the dog is best treated.

Oh. If you do give a sedative, first of all, remember you suck, drugging a dog is in my mind no different that drugging a two year old kid. Second of all consult a vet. Dosage is important and dogs don't react to all drugs like people do.

humbug:

No, the owner has disappeared and is not responding. I'm not trying to treat the dog badly, I just think it's going to be completely terrified when the fireworks go off, she will be scared out of her mind, so I'm worried about her.

Scandinavian:

Just stay with the dog. Usually dogs will just need comfort, it is very rare they would do something self destructive like biting themselves.

By the way, and this is probably not possible in China, most people I know back home who have dogs that are afraid of fireworks, will put them somewhere where there is no fireworks. Actually some kennels market themselves as being far away from places where people use fireworks. Our own dog sure doesn't like it, but we let him suck it up. When I walk him, and fireworks goes off near us, I will spend time to sit down, comfort, maybe a treat and then continue walking when he is back to "slightly anxious"
