Q: Are non-native English teachers legally allowed to teach English in China?

Hi everyone,

In the light of the new regulations is it still possible for a non-native teacher of English to land a job in China or for a recruitment company to offer a teaching position?

If limits are set on the recruitment process, to what should a non-native carefully look for in order to avoid scams and possible victims scenarios?

Any replying is very much appreciated,

Thank you very much.

Not legally unless you have a degree from an English-speaking country.....I think so anyway....but to just get a job...sure you can....I still see lots of ads for " No degree" and "Any country welcome" on job sites. Proceed with caution is my only advice.

I concur. Some I read that somewhere but I'm not sure it is law yet. If You are lucky to get an FEC in your passport then your school pulled some strings. But officially you would be working Illegally, I also heard, again some provinces might view the laws differently, that the degrees are not required if you are teaching pre-schoolers. Either way; you would be getting a work visa with the FEC included with the visa. That is supposed to be the new regulation to prevent forged FEC's being used.

PulSartre:

That's what I was afraid about. I tend to believe that some phishy offers may complicate the status of NNE in China. I also hear that there are loads of NNEs still teaching. Get to know what's what for certain. Hard to say and many are assumptions and rumors.

I am an American English teacher with coworkers from Turkey and Belarus. I think you should be fine.

c&p from another thread:

Working permit for laowai English teacher can be submitted only online, i.e unified system for whole China.

Non-native English teacher with degree from Native English country qualified for English teaching WP before 2017, and now as Iron is reporting on another thread, that possibility was taken off.

Native English teacher (passport from big 5 countries), BA degree, TEFL or TESOL Certificate and 2-years of working experience is the last requirement for an English teaching Working permit in China, no different than in Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, HK and most other Non-native English countries!

In other words, Non-native English passport holders are all working illegally in China.

A:It's up to the employer if they want to hire you that's fine most cities today require you to take a health check every year when renewing the working visa if you pass the health check and you get your visa renewed each year I know teachers that are in their 70s and they're still doing great -- ironman510
