Q: Are there any low cost or free counseling/therapy/psych services offered in China now?

One of my students recently told me that now Chinese people can get free access to counseling/psychotherapy sort of like how we have in England on the NHS.

Does anyone know if this is true? I can't find any info on it.. I know most Chinese people are adverse to the idea of getting help for psychological problems.

And what about for foreigners? How would one get referred to see a Psychologist or counselor, let's say if they spoke Chinese, and saw a Chinese doctor, does anyone have any experience of this? Or is it all very expensive and hard to find good psychologists here? Any info on couples counseling and or family therapy options for Chinese people?

question 2 of 3, you may ask more than 3 questions, since you are asking anonymously, you aren't getting points anyway.

To answer your question, maybe ask a Chinese person.

I have no idea as to your question, but let's assume there are cheap or free  psych services here...would you really want to use them?

I tried finding psychological help for a friends boyfriend in Guangzhou, couldn't find any English speaking counsellors. Seemed to be some in HK but their hourly rates were high.

OP - you mention the NHS. Have you ever tried accessing mental health services in the UK? I needed help with depression& anxiety 7-8 years ago. Waste of time due to very long waiting list, even for CBT. I went private eventually at £150/hour. Bloody expensive at the time but looking back it was worth it as it helped me.

I would not go cheap on this. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

If you wanna go the cheap route, seek out a TCM clinic and have them shave you bald and cup your head.
