Q: Are there foreign-sponsored "wumaos" posting?

Sometimes I wonder if there are US (or similar imperialist governments) agents posting on sites like this, or generating news stories that make China look bad. Actually, everything I read about China before coming here made it seem like a filthy country where you can't trust the food, the water, the people, or the air, where the authorities are watching your every move, where people have never even heard of other countries, etc.

What I've found instead does have many frustrations (mainly arising from uncivilized/unethical behavior), but also awesome food, many friendly people (especially the "normal" people just on the street or riding the bus), beautiful land, etc.

This makes me wonder if other countries don't actively sponsor propaganda to make China look bad. Like the American version of wumaos. I guess that would be a 1George or a 5Lincoln? How much would "They" have to pay "You" to post things that hurt China's feelings?

every country engages in some degree of propaganda. As you pointed out, the reality of China is a lot different from what you were led to expect before arriving. It is reasonable to assume some posters have their own agenda behind their posts, but it depends on how seriously you take what they say.

I too would jump at the chance of being "paid" to do what I do anyway............  chances of influencing my remarks would be nil, but maybe a little broader remarks could grow....  middle east ... DPRK.... India border

The thing is there are probably loads of good jobs like that but it's finding them.  No way will they be advertised.  I mean I'd love to review porn all day but for whatever reason that's never listed in the career section.  Funny world aye.

"...everything I read about China before coming here made it seem like a filthy country where you can't trust the food, the water, the people, or the air, where the authorities are watching your every move, where people have never even heard of other countries, etc." Have you ever read any Chinese Blogs? They same the same thing! Here's a quote,

  1. “Conscience has no value, law has no dignity, morality has no bottom line, the people have no rights, husbands and wives have no fidelity, love is not pure, LD [the leaders, rulers] don’t speak the truth, food is not safe, the environment has no tomorrow, property rights have no guarantees, culture has no outlet, innovation has no market, greed has no limits, ideas have no belief/conviction… Question: Where is this?

民主与法制 [网易上海市网友]: (responding to above)

Let me add one more, “dictatorship has no end date”.”

Sinobear:

Nationalism, ethnocentricity, xenophobia, pride and ignorance exist everywhere. There are the pollyannas here, the "grass is always greener" posse, the cynics, the malcontents and the misfits. There are the genuinely happy, the "honeymooners", the make-doers, the cheated and the disillusioned. Good news and all-around contentment don't make for good press (save for the religious groups).

I am a foreign troll. I get paid for my posts in flash lights. i sow discord on the internet by making people laugh. My off topic remarks are meant to get emotional responses and disrupt normal on topic conversations. I will twist your words if I can and make you a joke. BTW, the flash lights never work.

BHGAL:

You ungrateful prick….. the flashlights require batteries and a bulb….. they are not, as the Brits think, torches, that only require a match to light.

every thing story I have told about China is true   some good and some that makes the hair on your neck stand up! Governments do not need to pay for negative stories as the media look for them to boost ratings. Bad stuff always attracts more attention than a happy story .      sad fact of life

i think you'ev just confirmed it. " imperialist governments" who exactly are the imperialists?

just because the food tastes good and you do not get sick today or the next day, does not mean the food is safe.

china does have a lot of unique problems,

food contamination is a problem that the ccp admits to.

you want to tell me that the air is cleaner here?

water pollution is a bigger problem here and people depend on these water sources moreso than in my country. people drink from rivers and lakes, use rivers and lakes to water crops, wash their clothes, and even bathe in.

the ccp even acknowledges cancer villages, but i guess you think "duh i haven't seen any.. so ... duh they don't exist" and you never will see them (foreigners are banned from these areas)

you want to tell me you can trust the people? start a business and then see how that goes. if you are fresh off the plane, how could you possibly think you've seen all of china? you truly are naive.

sam239:

I'm aware of everything you've mentioned, but the negative information about the country on the web makes it sound much worse than what I've seen myself firsthand, which is what I can comment on. Hence why I wonder if there is a sort of propaganda war being waged. And the "imperialist" governments was sarcastic.

it's called news reporting. bad news sells . the news reports about gun violence makes america seem like a warzone.

don't you know anything? they are not going to report, "someone raised a pig feeding it clean food and slaughtering it in a clean way" thatis what supposed to happen, so it will not get reported. when someone doesnt do it the way it is supposed to, then it becomes news.

wow, is it me or shouldn't everyone know this?

The negatives you heard before coming to China are here in abundance.  Even the locals know this.  How long have you been in China?  To be completely honest, I think it is hard to exaggerate what is happening here.  I have stories my family will find hard to believe.  I don't see how foreign wumaos would be necessary.  Wumaos are a product of Chinese thinking.  They are not an effective propaganda tool against foreigners.  Wumaos may be good at influencing the sheep-like society in China, but to foreigners (especially expats) they are just target practice.  Don't get me wrong, we have our fair share of sheep in America.  But most of them will eat the Chinese sheep for breakfast.  Still, the sheep herding days of wumaos are getting fewer with each new generation of Chinese.  Sooner or later, China will catch up to the Western world.

xinyuren:

On the other hand, have you noticed that every innocent article on an American news website seems to spawn political comments (Conservatives vs Democrats)?  Makes me wonder.  Maybe we "wumao" our own people like the Chinese.

1 mao is 10 Chinese cents.

So a US wumao would be called a fiftycent

I think the wumao aim is to create a network of fake expat sites, populated by pretend foreigners churning out party propaganda. It will make people love China even more than they already do.

sam239:

It doesn't make me like China more, I kind of despise the fact that "they" are on this site...expat sites I've been active on in SE Asia and other east Asian countries (such as thaivisa and waygook) have been free of them. You just have to look at the front page of this site to see there's an agenda behind it. Also it tends to make the site more racially and politically tense, which I fear scares the decent Chinese people (and let's not forget that the bulk are basically decent in intention) away.

Yes it's true. I confess, I am the foreigner who sponsors Silva.

Now I feel free, having removed the burden of the world from my back, I can rest. The secret is out. Now you know.

What was the other question?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
