I have been stopped twice already by people in Beijing, who asked me where I'm from, what I'm doing here, and then asking to see my passport. Random people. Not police.
Some friends said the best response was to ask to see their hukou first, since many might have issues with that. It sounds a little passive aggressive though. I'm just feeling very uncomfortable with this situation

If a total stranger approaches me on the street, and ask to see my passport in civilian clothes, the first thing I will do is to inquire who is he, and to show some type of ID.
If he complies, and he is in some official capacity, I will show (not hand him) him the passport. Now, if a person in a Police uniform approaches me, I will have no problem showing it to him or her.
But asking for the person's hukou booklet will not tell me anything of value in my mind.

Wow, I always viewed Chinese as opportunist for business but that really takes the cake. i do believe I would just walk away
If they are in uniform, I will gladly comply.
If they are in civilian clothes , I will ask it they are police. If so, I will comply. If not, I will just walk away without a word.
