Q: Asking the Socratic questions?
Did you ever try to apply Socratic questioning in conversation with Chinese people?
Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I think if I keep trying on the wife, it will end in divorce rather than a conversation.
Theoretically this method of questioning should be a way to get around the deer in headlights problem, but it seems to enhance it in many cases.
Give us some examples. Some of us have never heard of "Socratic questions."
Scandinavian:
Socratic questioning primer.
Mrs. Hulk: "Dear mother, pray tell, why do you think it is too soon for my womb to yet again be home to a little one"
Evil MIL: "Because your tripple energizer will be all out of whack"
Mrs. Hulk: "But mother dearest, why do you think this is, do you have any evidence as to this being the case"
Evil MIL: "This is what ALL TCM doctors say"
Mrs Hulk: "Dear sweet mother, do you not think that perhaps western medicine could be correct since it is under constant development"
Evil MIL: "No, this is that green douche that has brainwashed you to not be Chinese any more. Chinese bodies are different"
Mrs Hulk: "Oh mother, that is severely racist of you. My lovely Hulky has certainly done no such thing to me. Would you not be willing to accept that there can be more than one correct viewpoint of things.

My... *our* ... wife takes Socratic questions as some sort of nagging to make myself look smart, thus, she find it annoying. I got better success by pointing out blogs and books. On some topics, any attempt at rationalism fails, medicine being the chief offender. Any really good biology book in Chinese ?

And yeah, I point out blogs, news articles, books, etc. It has had more success than directly confronting her.

scan and myself came to the conclusion that we are married to the same woman. They behave the same, have same size, weight, hair color, skin color, eye color, etc.
I cannot recommend the Socratic method in China. Try to find a lawyer, they love to debate just for fun.
If I hear "the Chinese body is different" one more time, I will enrage and wipe the raid.
