Q: Background / Non-Criminal check for US citizens

Hi, if I live in China for 3 years now will I have to submit a background/non-criminal check (new law, April 2017) if I want to change an employer (new contract, different city)? Or should I get it locally in China from police or something? I don't feel like going back home (USA) just for that (besides I'll have to authenticate it there as well).

Please help with the info.

Just found out: in Shanghai background check is required and you must get it in YOUR country. It doesn't matter when your visa/rp expires and if you're in China like forever. If the school tells you it's not required then it could be something fishy there (as far as I understand it now).

Oh btw it takes up to 6-8 weeks to get it (at least in the USA).

Do the math.

I would still say that's not 100% accurate. The school it self may want it, while the FEC office requires the one where you lived the last 6 months. Why would China want our background check like in my case 10 years ago, I gave my FBI to China already 10 years ago, they can see I've only been here, so doesn't it make sense to check here in China ? I'd say if they are asking you your situation is different or your name is on a special list.

According to the school all new teachers provided it, has nothing to do with someone special or something. But of course they may be lying to me. I don't know.

We'll soon find out, keep your ears open to others renewing in Shanghai and ask them. People have a right to know so they can prepare well in advance. This is a high time in numbers with regards to renewals or transfers. We should soon be hearing from others, problem is anyone we help don't get back to us with their results, only a few guys these days.

If you've been in China, get it from the police in China'

ironman510:

Also don't forget to bring your "temp police registration sheet." I forgot mine and I had to go to my local police station and get it printed than go back to the Police station that does the background check, you just need that and your passport.

Hate to the bearer of bad news, but the Chinese criminal check may not work. I am waiting to see if it will or will not. It would not surpise me if it doesn't, nor I have I read anything officially about it will working. Just second hand information at best.

It will work, its a nation law, its also related to a global law. The China background check will work fine. No worries. @ Zhenglaien, never trust what a Chinese HR or company says about visa requirements until you're infront of the FEC officer. But you can trust your HR for TV show updates. Get the point? I told you two times already you'll be fine.

By the way, if you're staying with the same company/school it won't affect you, it's only for those who change.

Yeah we know that, thanks
