Q: Beijing's national museum: Thoughts and feedback??
I went there yesterday, and have to say the 30 minute in line was easily worth it! I haven't been to too many museums anywhere to be particular, but I gotta' say that the Beijing museum was pretty awesome. I accidentally did the whole "Ancient China" exhibit backwards and I was pretty exhausted before the exhibit even ended. So I started out with the Ming and ended up in the Prehistory section. Little did I know the Qing dynasty all the way up until now was in a different exhibit altogether. That was more interesting for me because there were more photos and things to look at besides the pots and clay figurines you got in the other one. Ah, 80 % it it seemed to be in Chinese though. So much stuff to look at it's impossible.
Wondering if anybody else liked the museum as much? Good or bad feedback is welcome. Overall i recommend it for sure!
I went there once and was able to see just about 40% of the museum. Had planned to go back but couldn't go. Maybe next time I am in Beijing.
The English and Chinese problem is very uncomfortable. Sometimes you walk past a couple of pictures and later you realize oh there was English written about those pictures or things..but most of them do not have any English description... Plus the statues and models were very impressive.
Everytime I go to Beijing they seem to be doing some sort of construction so I can't get in. It sounds like it is open now. That is good, i like museums.
I went there last year and really enjoyed it and would certainly go back if I am in Beijing again. My only criticism is that for a national museum in a capital city promoting tourism from all around the world the number of bi-lingual or multi-lingual displays were somewhat limited. Apart from that though I was impressed.

Hmm yeah that was sorta my idea too. Most of the time I was the only foreigner in the more current exhibit because of the lack of English descriptions. The few foreigners I saw sorta' breezed by. It was great reading some of those documents from the Qing, which basically called foreigners barbarians at the time. The English on there was "imperial directions for dealing with foreign diplomats" or something like that. haha! Talk about a quaint translation there. And for all the Opium war stuff dealing mainly with France, Britain, America and Japan (there were others but mainly these 4) those were definitely not translated one bit ;o) Maybe the Chinese would sound too brutal if they put it into English or something...?
