This has been asked before but I'm thinking its one of those things that will get different answers just about everytime. Especially if there's new blood coming in all the time. I've seen cities like Suzhou and Zhuhai mentioned, but I want to see if there's anything else that can be added to the list. Feel free to just put your favorite place in your answer too, I won't give a rip. So far Suzhou looks good but its always good to see if theres new discoveries that have been made. Cheers.

Dongguan.
Why does nobody want to go to Dongguan ?
thedude:
Because whenever I see something very dirty....I say...damn...that is dirtier than a Dongguan KTV girl...nuff said.
That's like asking how long is a piece of string!
It all depends on what you want. For cleaner air, transport links, some western stuff, clean city, then in my view look around Guangdong. Zhuhai is okay but a strange layout for me...long and narrow along the coast. For the big city life you've got Shenzhen & Guangzhou though I prefer the latter as it ha some history/culture compared to Shenzhen. The "hidden" jewel down here is Zhongshan. Small city compared to the others but developing nicely & apartments still affordable. Some others like Foshan but the road links into the city are a bloody mess!
I can't comment on places outside Guangdong.

cool, crisp, clean air and water of Xijang (Tibet)

Eorthisio here, still in Foshan, not moving anytime soon. City is improving a lot, in 2~3 years the Financial High-tech Zone will be on par with Zhujiang in.Guangzhou, probably even better.
Hotwater:
We were wondering where you'd gone!
I like downtown Foshan, especially around Zumiao temple/lingnan tiandi but as I said above. Getting in and out of that area driving is a nightmare. Hopefully the main roads will improve once the metro extensions are completed as the roads to GZ are a mess.

I agree - I've lived in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and also 2 years in a much smaller city in Hubei Province. In terms of enjoyment/quality of life/"cultural experience" the smaller towns are better (easier lifestyle, more social interaction). In the bigger cities you will earn more (probably also work more) but also spend more. End of the day it all depends why you're here and what you're trying to get out of it in the end.
Yeah, what are you looking for from the city you want to live in?
Great traveling options and well connectedness to high speed rails? Chengdu, Xi'An, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou or Shenzhen
Warm weather all year long? Kunming, Fujian, Guangxi and Guangdong province
Attention from Chinese girls? Shenzhen and other not so famous tier2 and tier3 cities
Cheap living costs? Tier2 and Tier 3 cities
Learning mandarin? Anywhere except for Guangdong

cities suck by and large.. but for chinerland,,, SZ & GZ
Wuxi is cool. Clean and modern and the girls wear the shortest skirts possible.
I guess it's too mainstream to be cool on this forum, but I'll say it....
Shanghai!!!
If you're a single smoker (don't care about pollution) who wants job opportunities outside of education and plenty of western comforts, that's the spot.
but ya Taipei would be great too.
Not anywhere in Guangdong if you want to learn proper Mandarin, IMO.
iron-man:
Why not Guangdong? I thought everyone spoke Mandarin in Shenzhen.
WooMow:
In theory they do, but it's a 30 year old city, there's no "locals", just migrant workers from all over. Really it's just a hodge-podge of regional dialects, and I found it very hard to understand the average person. I.E. some people replaced the "n" sound with an "l" sound, so grandma was lai lai not nai nai. it was frustrating.
Hong Kong...no exceptions...unless you are stuck in Mainland China...then Shenzhen.
I'd just like to point out that the OP doesn't, anywhere, mention "China"....
