Hey guys, what's currently the best way to get to Hong Kong from Guangzhou? I know you can take the train but I've heard there is a bus too? Which is cheaper/faster?

The bus will take hours and hours and if the border crossing is slow, you will loose extra time there, too. Otherwise, I would simply go to Guangzhou East Station or the station in Hong Kong and take the direct, rapid express train. It's fast, it's convenient and customs and immigration facilities are a lot easier too.
Train is the only way.
Unless you have the 'do re mi' for Helicopter service...
Train is not the only way ,but it's one of the fastest way. we always get the train from Guangzhou east station whenever we go to HongKong as we are in Guangzhou as well.
If you are in Panyu, you might want to consider the ferry. It is almost as fast as the train and the border crossing in HK is much less crowded. Plus it costs about the same as the train.
Now... If you are just doing a visa run then the train might be the best route since it will allow you to get there and back in the shortest amount of time.
I researched this and when my plane was diverted to GZ, I knew how to get to HG, bus, train, van was going to be my choice as I read I didn't have to get out and walk through customs. I could never convince my Chinese girl friend that I ever knew anything. We ended up taking a taxi (her idea) and dragging bags up long stairways in and out of customs. I took the bus back and it wasn't bad, no stairway. Just in one side of a building and out the other side, a bit of a walk tho.
Get the train at Guangzhou Dong Zhan ...........an hour or so and you will be there
I never knew about the ferry in Panyu... Definitely have to try that sometime.
I know of 3 ways to get there (specifically to Mongkok):
1. Bus
Buses leave from GZ to HK every day and from a lot of places. It usually takes me 4 hours to get from GZ to HK (including spending time at the Immigration). I like the bus because it can drop me right in Mongkok.
2. Bullet train from GZ East station (I think GZ railway station to Shenzhen is also possible?) to Shenzhen, cross the border and take the subway
Takes one hour to get from GZ to Shenzhen, spend about half an hour or so at Immigration and then 30-50 min (not sure, but definitely longer than 30 min) on the subway from Luohu/Shengsui to the Mongkok.
3. Direct train from GZ East station to Hong Kong (I think it stops at the Hung Hom Station, where you can change to the MTR subway directly).
Of the 3 I mentioned, the bus is the cheapest. Costs around 80-90 RMB, but takes the longest.
The 2nd option: GZ to Shenzhen bullet train is 60 or 80 RMB (sorry, forgot!) and then after you cross the border taking the subway costs 40-50 Hong Kong Dollars.
3rd option is the most expensive (something like 180-200 RMB?) but the most comfortable.
BHGAL:
I think option 3 is not as costly as you have stated .pretty sure I did it for 90 RMB... maybe it was on sale........... and we sat in the first class car, because my sister-in-law said to.... then they came and told us to move, but I played dumb and stayed put, no problem, ..... the other 5 Chinese I was with moved back to where they belonged.
For me the easiest and simplest way is to take the high-speed train from the GZ East station. It is accessible from the GZ metro and the train leaves every 20 minutes or so. The train goes directly to the Lowu crossing to HK. After crossing the border, hop on the KCR which connects to the MTR and everywhere else in HK.
Another option is to take the bus from the Garden Hotel. It is right outside the Taojin metro station and you can buy a ticket that takes you right into HK (the ticket office is right next to the Bank of China, and the ticket ladies all speak english, usually). If you're not in a hurry, the bus is a little more relaxing as you don't have to walk (run) to get on the train(. The bus takes you to the border where you have to undergo all the customs and immigration formalities but once you get across, just get back on the bus and it'll take you to Shatin, Mongkok or Central. Like the Greyhound bus ads, just sit back and leave the driving to us.
Plan on an average of about 3 hours to make the trip. I've taken both the train and bus and they both take about the same amount of time. However, if you're in a hurry to get to HK, you have to follow the bus's schedules, whereas if you take the train, it leaves every 20 minutes or so.
Both costs the same at RMB80 per person. I know there are other ways to get to HK depending on where you are located in GZ but these two methods work for me. Hope this helps.
