Q: Born in Hong Kong - double passport or passport hukou?

I know things are easier for those born in Hong Kong - they can work both in China and abroad fairly easily. But what do they have in the way of papers? Is it a Hong Kong passport, valid in mainland and abroad, or is it a Chinese passport with a Hong Kong hukou?

For those that fulfill the requirements for a Hong Kong passport, it will be a valid document to travel, and no need for a PR of China Passport.

Those requirements are :

  • -a Chinese citizen;
  • -a permanent resident of the HKSAR; and
  • -a holder of a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card.

Yes, I can travel abroad with my HK passport. If I work in China, I am just required to provide my HK ID card copy. However I have been told that I cant keep both HK and PRC passports simultaneously, which means I will have to give up my HK passport when applying for the PRC passport.......

Ciao, do not give up your HK passport. It entitles you to way more than the PRC passport. Don't do that to yourself.

All HK passport holders can live, work and reside in Mainland China as long as they can present either their HK passport or HK ID card and register at the local police
