i'm wondering if they work a bit like a union, in that they can help me stand up against my boss.
he's continually bending and interpreting the terms in my contract in his favour, and it's starting to get tiresome. it started when i signed the contract last year: "by the way, 25 teaching hours means 25x90minutes" unfortunately for him, my total hours per week are 34 on the contract and i can count.
i discussed payment of overtime work again for the umpteenth time, and it still remains to be seen whether he'll pay me for the 12 hours i was dressed up as santa on christmas eve (tuesday wasn't even a normal workday for me). since it's a new school, the chinese staff agreed to work extra for no extra pay, and they resent that i don't comply.as a result of the discussions, i'm probably the only staff member who got no holiday bonus, and i foresee that discussions about completion bonus or wage increase for the completion of the first year will go nowhere. suggesting that i'm entitled to a flight ticket allowance for a visit home will just make them angry.
many will probably say this school is bad, and i should find a better place. however it's the only decent job in the local city, which allows me to spend more free time with wife and kid. moving to chengdu will double traveling time and triple costs. plus, there aren't many good jobs on offer right now. maybe it's seasonal.
before spring festival i told my wife on qq i planned to look for other work, and the next day an ad for my position appeared here on the job boards. maybe they already decided to replace me, because there is no holiday bonus or gift for me. but i think it's more likely that they spy on my qq at work.
when i announced that i'd leave last year, the boss threatened me (wrote a blog about it a while back), but the co-owners forced him to apologize. i'd like to explore my possibilities in this workplace first, and i'm wondering if an agency can help me defend my rights.

Contact SAFEA in your city. It is the same Chinese Government org., where you got your FEC. There are no 'unions' in China!
If your School/boss modify Contract, you can walk away (get new job), and keep your Residence permit.
If you are in the smaller city, get Chinese English translator for SAFEA. In bigger cities, SAFEA officers speak passable English.
My advice, get help to leave immediately. If you stay, he will continue to screw you over. In China, you have no recourse against your employer.
I am sure this is not a popular opinion and i have said it before but perhaps you should focus more on your work. 7 years in China and the only people have seen get screwed around like you are talking about are teachers who are percieved to be poor at their jobs. I understand that there are bad schools everywhere and there are douchbags everywhere but the one thing douchbags love more than being dicks is making money so if you were doing enough of what he perceived you needed to be doing then i doubt that this would be happening to you.
Im not saying your not a good teacher.I often see people get burnt out, tired of dealing with the bullshit. Refuse to do things they would normally do, complain more. Or perhaps it was never a riht fit from the beginning. You dont want to act the monkey while he expects that to be part of the job.
Im just saying, you dont want to leave, finding a union to fight for you will only make your life hell. If your going to stick it out there then perhaps change your atitude, find what you can do differently and see if you see a change in your employer, if not...run!

last year i had to renew my visa, and they requested that i renew my family visit visa again. we were given assurances that bribes were in place for it, but when my wife accompanies me, she was given some stern questions by immigration about my activities at the school. they caught her lying that i stayed home to care for my baby, and revealed that they knew all about my work. according to them, the only reason i wasn't arrested is because of my son. they advised me to get legal work in chengdu quickly. when i confronted my boss, he acted very nonchalant about my safety, telling me to relax like a smoothtalking 80s guy. that when i announced i'd leave the company, and the boss subsequently threatened to hurt my wife's little school in the county. eventually he apologized at the behest of the investors, and i decided to stay on and risk it. you're right mike & mike: the fault is definitely mine. but unlike the claim in your pseudo-advice, calling my competence into question, it has nothing to do with me being a douchebag. i simply trusted people too much, thinking that the boss was at least working towards a similar goal as i was. i hurt his feelings by not being a submissive employee after he threatened me like a child, so he enacts revenge at me by screwing me over for salary. i hurt your feelings too, mike, by calling you out for dickish comments you made in the past. so, you enact revenge by taking cheap shots at me in my question thread. grow up.

dude..... im lost. i know my english is shit, but where did i call you a douchebag? i thouht i was plainly calling your boss a douchebag. Perhaps if you read it again , less defensivly, you would see my comments in a different light. Hell i thought i was quite sensitive, making excuses you could use. I was simply trying to stress that some reflection could help. Its easy to blame others. Your boss might be the biggest dick in history, but even even he would probably treat you much better if you were filling his "perceived" ideas of what your duties are. I was trying to say, finddout what those are and do your best as you said your kinda stuck there for now.
