I got one in my wallet. So yes. It is however tied to my health insurance (basically the money I've paid for insurance is there as guarantee. There are other stories of people having gotten credit cards.

Hotwater:

As an aside to the original question....who do you have your health insurance with?

Yes. Contrary to popular belief, Chinese did not invent everything.

I am non Chinese, and I had a credit card in my wallet decades ago.

Only joking dude wink.

It's all about how you ask the question. No need to be shy. Details are important.

"Can a foreigner resident in China get an internationally recognized  credit card from a Chinese bank?"

Yes.

But make sure you have a good anti virus on your PC before you use it.

from what i understand your chances at a big state bank (ICBC, CCB, BOC etc) are pretty much zero unless you have some kind of asset here like a house or company or from what Scan said, some kind of contributory insurance policy which can be collateralized.

the privately held ones have looser requirements, so you may have some luck there. a lot of times theyll start you out at 1/3 of your monthly salary to a minimum of 3000 rmb as a limit. so if you make less than 10K youre out of luck...though having a credit card make checking into hotel rooms much easier anyway even with a low limit.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
