Q: Can you access the South China Morning Post (SCMP) online newspaper edition?

I have been unable to access the South China Morning Post (SCMP), which is a Hong Kong English newspaper for the past few weeks.

Has this website been banned in China now or can you access it online where you are?

I found this publication to be an unbiased newspaper to obtain Hong Kong, China and foreign news in the past.

I can't open it - not running a VPN here.

I thought it was always blocked though so I'm not surprised.

Stiggs:

As far as the blocking goes, it may depend on where you are.

To be honest though, I would be surprised if it wasn't blocked.

Needs VPN from the mainland. Despite now belonging to China's prodigy #1, it still writes stuff about things that can be conceived as "inconvenient to know" for the general public in the mainland. The good thing is that the paper is no longer pay-walled, I am just not sure I think it is a good news source anymore. It is on the same downward spiral as Hong Kong in general. Was awesome some years ago, now less awesome.

...but, hasn't it always been firewalled to protect the fragile feelings of the netizens of the middle kingdom.

Meh, it actually was an awesome catch by the mainland, because now they have a propaganda platform with better English/proper apologists and an actual reputation to smash to pieces.

Top articles these days are like "Why hong kongers should be thrilled about  swarming nongs" and "Hey HK students, let's not be so arrogant, on the other side they're are as efficient as you for half the price so just shut it or else" or "Protesters are the irresponsible ones driving us down".

Totally Guardian style, "yeah we just write unpopular stuff like it's general opinion and fuck you very much".

If you use a certain VPN it will screw with your settings making some site inaccessible when you have the vpn turned off.  I'm experiencing it now. \

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
