Q: Can you ever really trust eating chuan(r)?

Street meat brochettes...seriously, isn't that a surefire way to end up sick? Those things always look like the meat might either not be what you think it is, or the spicy oil they cook it in is a sewer cocktail.

I trust it. First time i ate Kao Rou on the street was sick for a week but the body got used it to and now it is one of the stable foods I eat during the summer. Most of the time it is lamb or beef they are putting on the skewer.

Im sure there are plenty of bad ones, but most of them are good. Ive eaten them loads of times and never been sick... though it might give you an extra bowel movement a little later.

I always stick to the ones that have lots of people around. They seem to get a good reputation from the locals and keep it.

But if youve ever seen the kitchen of a lot of these hole in the wall restaurants, then you might think that the shao kao isnt so dirty.

no, a lot of them are cat meat!

bonita8187:

there are a lot of homeless cats , actually its quite a big problem in china, so people they drug those cats and then put those bodies in sheep's pee pee for 3 hours, and they use special powder and sauce to make any kind of meat taste like beef or lamb. make them tender too. Look up, it's very common, there was one guy who was doing this business for 3 years, he himself never eat those chuaner, not just him, there are a lot of articles about this. According to the price of beef and lamb, real bbq should be a lot more expensive, or they are not making any money, so most of those street bbq meat are cat meat.
