Time for a guessing game, kids. Can you guess which 2 regular board users I suspect have become paid mouthpieces?
Their writing styles seem the same, so I don't believe their accounts were hijacked or anything. But they are singing a very pro-China tune now.
I'm not certain they became wumaos, but if others can name the same 2 users, I'll confirm my suspicion. This is not intended to offend, for what it's worth.
Me and scotts?
royceH:
Well, you can both be apologists for certain things here (not the same things) but that hasn't been something that's changed only recently so I'd leave you out.

I would do it for a Z visa
Should we play the same game about who is paid by the CIA
Great isnt it. The people who most preach about freedom are the people who attack those who have different views to them. That is not democracy. that facism.
Go ahead... oppress me
See the irony?
coineineagh:
people openly accuse gouxiong of being a wumao. the difference between him and the people i suspect is… he was like that from the start. i'm not objecting to different opinions, i'm vigilant against deception for the sake of opinion-forming. sudden changes in opinion are entirely possible and don't need to be caused by being on a payroll, but they are grounds for the people who 'know' them to be suspicious. in short: oppression - oh please…
ScotsAlan:
I thought the whole point of open discussion was to change peoples opinions about things. Maybe my left wing ideas have rubbed off :)
coineineagh:
changing your mind and changing other's minds is no problem. but a paid wumao who uses his/her persuasive ability to sway opinions is harmful for free speech. they wouldn't believe in their own words if they weren't payed by an institution to state them. it's akin to advertisement or lobbying. what usually happens, is that they don't have a consistent viewpoint, and just muddy the water so nobody knows what to think anymore. if what you're trying to say, is that Freedom of Speech is not a safeguard for Integrity of Opinion, you are absolutely right.
coineineagh:
Oh, that's how you out debate me, is it? This is China, so does resorting to namecalling mean you won the debate? Next step will be to tell me how much cooler your friends are than mine, I think. But I'm glad you had a nice evening, regretful for spoiling your mood, and hopeful we can put it past us in time. I'm going to flag this topic for removal now, because nerves are getting frayed.
coineineagh:
I apologize too. This thread was in bad taste, and I regret it already. If admin deletes it, I'll accept any and all consequences.
royceH:
Hey hey hey...wait a minute. I've only just found this thread. Don't delete it!
Anyway, now I'm a bit confused (not difficult). Don't you both dress well to the left?
pick me!
pick me!
pick me!
oh, i thought this was a popularity contest until i saw it was a guessing game - the usual suspects haven't chimed in.

One of these Posters just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which Poster is not like the others

Do we get a prize?
coineineagh:
I wish I could study Written Pirate English, then I'd troll the hell out of this board with random privateering phrases, and everybody would love me. Arrr matey!
you need to guess both right or i won't tell you. if you don't want to play this silly game, that's fine by me. but...
Can you live with the suspense of not knowing?
gouxiong is a troll, grammar gives it away.
Thelatinodancer has always been a troll - coming out from underneath its rock, tons of posts, back under the bridge for another couple of months.
Icnif is a troll, but I'm only going by physical appearances.
And, there's one troll especially near and dear to my heart (if I had one) that turns on a dime and generates more sock-puppet accounts than Vicky has neurosis. I shall not mention the poster, nor the infamous "totally legit organization that has more than 26000 members in China"
icnif77:
I gave a long thought to your eChina 'nation' address, and......you could be my 'president! -al candidate'...... ....wen iz da balot?
This thread could be considered user harassment, but I hope Admin understands that it's all in good humour. Regular users have all been accused of deception at some point, so just because I have a suspicion doesn't make it true. If offense is taken and hostility gets out of hand, I'll report my own thread for removal.
In the past month, two users have (somewhat) uncharacteristically started proclaiming their love for certain aspects of the CCP regime. Making statements I hadn't considered possible from them, as they're usually smarter in their opinions.
It was suggested I should offer a reward, so I'll send the correct guesser (regardless of whether I suspect you) an eChina jacket or points equivalent to an address of your choosing. Doesn't have to be your home address if you don't trust me with it.
Rule: One try per user. Two suspects named, or your attempt is invalid.
Mike tried properly, but didn't guess right. Everyone else can take a shot at it.
ScotsAlan:
No problem. All in good humour. You were just pissed off because you are an antropologist who teaches English. I am an engineer who can out debate you. By God. teachers hate Engineers. Of course, we have banter when we are bored. But our number 1 job is to give advice. China hands are nutters. Am I a China hand?
Spiderboenz:
What's wrong with Anthropologist English teacher? I am doing field research as an English teach for my thesis.
coineineagh:
OK, I accuse you of being a wumao, so you claim you out-debate me. I had that coming I guess. For the record I studied Biology, but I'm just a loser who never did more than internshipwork in the field. I just learned that my best friend and his boyfriend are both doing cancer research - they're so busy they hardly have time to help me pay for my kids' passport applications. I admire them. When I get to Europe, I'll be overjoyed if I can do something as meaningful as guarding a building. My bar for success is set quite low, and I'm essentially living through my kids. For the record, I also admire engineers a great deal: They're the ones who understand the inner workings of the devices that make our lives livable. Their contribution to society also transcends economic value. I will even advise my own sons that becoming an engineer is even better than doctor or lawyer, believe it or not. In my mind, I envision engineers working hard, building and fixing things. If I remember correctly mr. Scotsalan, you were not just an engineer, but a research engineer at that! I hope you specialize in digging holes, because you may need it to answer this question: how exactly do you do research by hanging out on ECC all day? Could it be that you're more like a bureaucrat or repairman, with a fancy title and a lot of free time on your hands? I always wonder this whenever people claim to be in prestigious high-workload professions.
Hulk:
coineineagh,
How does he have time as an engineer to post on ECC all day? You may have noticed that I rarely post anymore, but I do have plenty of time to post on ECC while at work. I've just chosen not to. I prefer to isolate myself.
I'm a Software Engineer / CTO, and I still have time for this. Most of my "engineering" work is done on the computer. ECC is on the intarwerbs. I just open it up in a tab when bored at work.

And that's the story of how I'm having a really hard time posting now. Is this website ran by the CIA?
ScotsAlan:
Hey... being a wumao is only part time. I post after work :-)
Scots and Hulk
coineineagh:
Well done. You have keen spidey-senses for paranoia. PM me an address and your preferred gift, then I'll leave delivery in ECC's capable hands.
ScotsAlan:
Hulk is CIA.
We have an agreement.
Want a new visa?
Get a life Coin. Seriously dude. You are going too far with this wumao stuff.
Hulk:
Upvote for Hulk.
It's true, I'm CIA. We're here to collect information on board members to make sure nobody is doing anything but teaching English. It's a national security risk to be doing anything but English.
Even if you're cooking, you're sharing America's recipes, and that can't be tolerated!
Hulk:
Not yet, my son. You must post a few hundred more wumaoish posts. You're almost there.
Chiming in here. Yeah, I've become a bit pro-China lately, but I'm not a wumao. I'm just tired of the bullshit and hypocrisy on both sides of the aisle.
Fact of the matter is, America is guilty of everything we accuse the CCP of being guilty of. And not just in the past, it's recently. More and more, I see my country becoming like everything we were taught was bad about the Soviet Union in the 1980s.
When you come back to 'murica, if you pay attention to the news outside of the mainstream media, if you pay attention to what everyday citizens are thinking about, and talking about, you'll realize it... but you'll probably have a moment of cognitive dissonance. When it hits, it hits hard. Might take you a while to realize it, but you will.
You'll either decide to accept it, or fight against it. Personally, I'm going to fight against it. I love my country, and don't want to see it go to hell.
ScotsAlan:
Scots shakes hands with Hulk.
Everyone boasts of having open minds. But from what I see here..... Hulk and myself are the only people who have fully open minds.
The rest of you are brainwashed.
coineineagh:
Not an American, but as a self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist and resident paranoid freak throwing about accusations of complicity, I totally agree that America has a terrible history. And present. But it serves no purpose to excuse China's wrongs because of this. You were actively being pro-CCP on a China board. I understand it may be your outlet for expressing disappointment with your own government, but it's counterproductive in this context. You should be anti-CCP and anti-USgov, otherwise you invalidate your own points. Awrong is not excused by a larger wrong elsewhere. And Scotsalan's statement that the CCP has "not don worse than any other government" is so friggin' retarded; I don't suspect FBI, CIA or even CCP. It seems more like the work of XTC. "Yer' so greit, CCP. I luv ya. Giv us a hug."
Hulk:
Where was I being pro-CCP?
Post proof here. I don't think you'll find me supporting, or excusing, either government.
I feel it's necessary to point out all problems and condemn them together.
What strikes me about this question, is that the subjects of the accusation are actually the people who have open minds.
The OP has the problem.
Some people have let themselves be brainwashed into thinking democracy is number one. The western system is the best.
Nope. It's not.
China has done more to get rid of poverty than Bob Geldof and his pal Bono have ever done.
coineineagh:
like what? "Water will seek its own level". They're just overseeing, making a profit, while some development trickles into the void they created.
ScotsAlan:
erm.... Infrastructure... hospitals... education....
Think they have done nothing? Go back ten years. Remember what it was like ten years ago.
coineineagh:
hospitals are TCM voodoo, and profiteering off of people's misery. Hospitals suck, unles you have lots of money, in which case they appear acceptable and you don't notice. Education is militarized drilling that traumatizes and deludes people for life. Infrastructure is deliberately botched in key junctions so provincial administrations can continue to claim subsidies from Beijing. Try again. What have they done?
Scandinavian:
In Zhuhai they built a road, 20-30 km of 6 lanes. It was too bumpy, they it was rebuilt, it is far less bumpy so now down to just being a roller coaster. This is NOT infrastructure, it is garbage.
ScotsAlan:
Can we start with saying that the Chinese Government has lifted millions of people from poverty?
They have done rather well there. You know, the Government has managed a change from subsistance farming and starvation from lack of food, to starvation from lack of Iphone. Very different things.
DrMonkey:
@ScotsAlan On the basis of "lifted people out of poverty", we can look at the whole Europe at the end of WWII. When the poverty have been self-inflicted with completely lunatic policies, anything a little bit rational will look like a freak'in miracle. Imagine if North Korea starts to behave a bit more rationally : "ho, it's a miracle, we can eat 100g of rice everyday !!! Our leaders are geniuses !"
Who gives a shit
It is the price we a for a open (semi open) forum
Just play the silly bugger game when you want and log off when you dont
this site has a good use just filter out the crap it yourself
I think who you're getting at is latinodancer and scots.
I think scots is naive but genuine
i think latinodancer may well have an agenda
So it's 600 posts to earn 300rmb a day, and work straight 30 days for 9000/month (I am guessing there should be other rules, like no comments on same website, no repetitive comments etc...) Is that enough money to put so much thought in it?
royceH:
No, that's wu jiao. One jiao equals ten mao. Or is it ten fen? Maybe ten mao's equal one fen and ten fens equal one jiao and ten jiaos equal one kuai.
Is it too early for a beer?
indalkar:
Fen is the smallest of currency and jiao and mao is the same... 10fen = 1jiao/mao , 10mao/jiao = 1yuan and hence wu(5)mao is .5 Rmb....
I think we do deserve a beer, lets go, I'm buying!!
What are your main weapons ?
royceH:
Hahahaha.... Very good, Dr!
So, how's life? And the wife? Big thing, moving to another country.
DrMonkey:
It's alright so far. My wife stresses a lot because settling down takes time : finding a place, renting it, setting up the utilities, buying a car, declaring my situation to public welfare, etc. It takes time and she want things to be done in a few days without a hitch, but life is not like that. We got a wonderful spring here.
royceH:
Good luck.
Has she found any Chinese speaking friends yet? Is this important?
And how is she coping with the food?
DrMonkey:
She is fine with the food, she appreciated a lot of new things for her. She even adopted some typical French things : fresh cheese on a piece of bread. She is addicted to it now, she can't finish a meal without it. Chinese friends, not yet, just an acquaintance that live several hours by car from us. The zero social life is a bit of problem, but it will come as she learns some words of language and go to school.
I cant help but think how eerily similar this site and the ajarn.com forum is when it comes to "discussions" like this. Coincidence ? Perhaps. But both do a fine job at trashing the respective countries they are in (Thailand and China respectively). Are these sites the 21st century cyber version of Vienna post WW2 ? Whos to say.
I think the whole scene on this website can be downright odd sometimes... The guy that has that organization with some 30,000 members is just one of the oddities. (By the way, if I'm large and in charge, can I join? Any services in Weihai?
I can get why there are a few oddballs that try making some kind of fake business through legal loopholes. But I don't understand what the point of battling contradicting viewpoints is. Like... what's to be gained from that? Anyway I prefer to stick my head in the sand to question of "motives" and treat posts on their own merit. As for the ones that are just obvious bait, there's no reason to click.
Good banter
Anyone here read the comments on youtube? Wow !!!
Lord_hanson:
Ahh, Youtube comments. They always reflect the best in humanity. Mostly racism and Nazi's, lol
That's it. I've read it. Seemed to peter out there towards the end. But time well spent. Cause there's fuk all else to do tonight. I think the snooker will come on after 10.
We were going out to an all you can drink huo guo joint but then we didn't. So I'm just on the piss and waiting for the snooker.
coineineagh:
the question was meant as amusement. and though it wasn't my best attempt at humour, i'm glad it still managed to entertain.
royceH:
Oh yes, it did. I was surprised at the rise you got out of some ppl though.
My ex-partner's ex-husband was Dutch. Definitely not an ounce of humour in that bloke. Perhaps it's not a strong suit of the Dutch?
Ex-partner was Indian, and they can sure do humour...but only other Indians find it funny! Hahahahaha...
coineineagh:
I'm Dutch-Scottish. I rely on the Scottish dour wit for my sense of humour, though not everybody appreciates cynicism. And since even basic irony is a threatening display of individual brainpower, Mainland China hasn't been kind to me. And Vice versa. The reason the Dutch have an aversion to humour, is because of their religious history. Scotland also became Reformed, but out on the fringe of the British Ilses, they didn't often clash with Catholics and other schools of Chrisitanity. Anyway, outspoken abundant laughter was considered an indulgenge/decadence to zealous reformed Dutch. They started opposing it, to their cultural detriment. Most Dutch nowadays are smart and decent to get along with, but their attempts at humour are below their intelligence level, often quite vulgar, to try to appear hip.
