I suspect that, that is from highest to lowest, because \I| never lived in any of them, but I know Shenzhen is  expensive  ............  I lived in Guangzhou for 6-7 months ..then I cut my living expenses in half by moving further south ..can you believe that???  further south and more beautiful place and half the cost  .what a great place..southern guangdong is where you want to be................  not hainan.

According to several polls worth of data, the most expensive cities in China for expats are (rated globally)

20 Beijing

21 Shanghai

38 Guangzhou

43 Shenzhen

Strangely enough, the top city on the list for multiple years in a row is: Luanda, Angola.

I would have never imagined that Angola would have even showed up on the list.

I live in Shanghai, before i lived in Yiwu, zhejiang. I feel here is cheaper many things, coz in yiwu was everything high price for white faces and because of quality issues, so u have to buy 3 pairs of shoes per year and overpriced, for example. Here is maybe rent house more pricey, but vegetable cost is at least half of what we paid in Yiwu. Strange Smile

I agree with Nessquick above.  Housing is expensive in Shanghai but otherwise the city is truly a jewel of affordable items if one looks carefully.  Very often taxi rides in the hinterlands are more expensive than in Shanghai for the same kilometers covered; there are numerous other items the same.  One can shop in the cheap clothing shops in Shanghai and get real bargains, often not to be had elsewhere.

dom87:

the hinterland taxi rides are always taking 5 people and charging each the bargained price. they dont use a taximeter

A lot of it will depend on how you live. If you want to eat as you did in your home nation then ANYWHERE will be expensive, if you're willing to eat as the locals do it will be relatively cheap and in those circumstances, Guanxi is one of the best, good tropical climate, not too cold in winter, so-so salaries but low cost of living, (so long as you don't eat 'western).

i m not sure how they measure these things.

apart from the housing shanghai is not more expensive than guangzhou.

And even in the city itself prices vary very much. Outer districts ice tea: 4 rmb, downtown 16 RMB

in gz and shanghai the same.

then i was in country side (my gfs parents home) food is quite cheap but clothes are super expensive.

for example lamien place (the noodle shop that exists everywhere) has the same price from north to south. 7 RMB in GZ, Shanghai and Changchun

it all depends on how you live your life.  Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai can be more expensive when you eat out and ride taxies everyday.  It's going to be a different story if you cook and ride ebike for daily transportation.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
