Q: Since Canada is a member of the Commonwealth, why there's no Union Jack in the corner?

Edit Before 1965 this used to be the Canadian flag.for some time. Other flags have a Union Jack too.

In 1965 there was a debate and finally the special flag committee chose the current flag of Canada.

India is also a member of the Commonwealth, and no Union Jack. Quite a few others, I think.

There was one but they removed it with Tipex.

tauney:

We don't call it Tippex in Canada...it's white-out or correcting fluid.

But the queen is on our coins, and we do have a province called 'British' Columbia and in that provincial flag there is a union jack.

Because we decided to throw off the shackles of the motherland back in 1965 and be our own country....offiacially in 1982 with the ratification of our constitution.

Even though officially the Queen is still our our head of state...rest assured this is purely ceremonial just to placate the older generation and has little power in the end.

DaqingDevil:

Yeah Australia is the same with respect to the Queen (why did I use a capital there???) but maintains the union jack. Wish they'd change the flag.

The queen is still your head of state? Did you know that she's also the nominal head of the Church of England?

TIL Canada is a theocracy.
