are my students going to playing computer games in september or take classes.
being an american i dont have horse in this race, but things dont look good for a teacher strike settlement.
looking at numbers was quite a shock
starting salaries 3000 lower than the average for the whole country
number nine in overall pay for the whole country
been to vancouver, not a cheap place to live
any canadians know more about this story.
the students have some orientation and travel plans for 3 weeks and then the learning is supposed to begin.
just for my curiosity, in america you have your basic state salary, if you live in high cost city, the local government throws in a stipend cost of living salary to get you to live and teach there, local counties may throw in more for rural areas because no body wants to live and teach there. is this common in canada as well. a salary in abbotsford bc would suck if it was the same for vancouver, bc.

When Unions go on strike, Nobody knows. I am sure you can come up with some educational activities. Your students might enjoy that more than a classroom.

Low pay and high cost of living are unfortunately the norm. It's not surprising to anyone looking at living in the Vancouver area. Aside from Victoria, it's the mildest place in Canada so lots of people want to live there and only so many jobs to be found.
Having said that, it doesn't mean the teachers shouldn't strike for better conditions(in my opinion).
