Q: Is CCTV9 worth watching?

I know it's the only CCTV channel in English - how are the programs?

So so but when it is the only thing on in English at times you have little choice. There can be some programs that are quite interesting at times.

Most of the programs are pretty good. The news, however, is pretty biased.

sometimes a decent documentary will pop up. the travel shows are ok but the hosts are bland bland boring people and really makes the show boring as hell.
also if you wanna have a laugh watch "dialogue" for the Chinese version of an in depth discussion on topics like. is china great? or super great?

If you're just interested about programs on Chinese culture, tourism, history, then they can have quite interesting programs.

Anything related to politics, news (either foreign or national), then most part of the information are often biaised even though they always want to show that a debate takes place.

Yeah, the "debate" is super biased. I don't like the host at all, it's so obvious. Even when there are other Chinese on there with a more neutral view, he basically ignores any valid points they have. Even though the news is biased, there's a lot about what's going on in the world, mostly the Middle East. I think the science programs are the most interesting. There was an episode about "glass boys," whose bones are so brittle they break extremely easily. I usually watch this channel when I'm surfing on the web. It's easy-listening background noise. Even if I knew a lot of Chinese characters, which I don't yet, I'd have to pay attention to the screen the whole time to watch any other channel.

Many people here think the news on CCTV is biased? Compared to what country? The USA? The USA media is by far the most biased, artificial and brainwashing information that exists. Americans think and believe everything they hear on US media about other countries, the US gov't has always and will always give you information making the US look good and everywhere else look bad to keep Americans with their heads in the sand. Just stating the obvious-- from an American ex pat who has been overseas for the past 26 years....

rich45:

so whats your point? american news is biased so that means cctv is not biased? common. at least in the US Glen Beck can go on air and call the president a communist fascist Muslim and not end up in some prison cell getting shocked in the balls. freedom of speech is a beautiful thing. even if you don't agree what is being said

laura.gage99:

Isn't that kind of a broad statement to say all Americans buy into that? US media is the biggest media machine on the planet and it covers a lot of different view points. Admittedly, many of which suck. But at least we have the variety. Not the bland, spoon fed, sanitized crap on the news channels here.

I'm not fond of the news shows. The English is REALLY super hard to follow. The news anchors have mostly tried to learn British accents for their English. On top of that some of them still have some pretty thick Chinese accents. On top of THAT they all talk like robots because that's the Chinese style of media.

The other programs are nice though.
