Apparently, the tourist visa rules have changed and people wishing to apply for a tourist visa from the UK to China now need an invitation letter, itinerary, return flights etc. Does anyone have any advice regarding the invitation letter? My friend is coming soon and I just found out I have to write an invite letter!

As posted on the website of the Chinese Embassy in UK, the following is valid from about mid January of 2012.
Since 16 January 2012 onwards, applicants applying for tourist and family visit visa should supplement the following supporting documents:
1. Invitation letter from a Chinese organization or a permanent resident in China; or
2. Air ticket booking record (round trip) and hotel reservation.
So, it is either a letter of invitation from a Chinese organization, or a permanent resident of China, OR a round trip ticket plus hotel reservation proof, NOT BOTH.
It would be my guess that if you have a residence permit good for one year, you will not qualify, since you are not a "permanent resident". But if you are married or have a GF, she would qualify, just write a letter inviting your friend over for a specific time and include the address of where he will stay, plus a copy of the ID of the one signing the letter.

I find the instructions on the embassy website embarrassingly vague. I have a one year residence permit so Im not considered a permanent resident and dont have the right to invite a family member to stay with me? That's just ridiculous!
Query... I am currently renting a unit in China, but will need to apply for a new visa... will this have any effect on things? Or, will I need to do something extra? (getting an invite letter could be an issue... hotels are easy)
