I've actually heard foreigners say it more than Chinese but regardless, the meaning is the same.

It's about the only sane answer you can give if someone asks you 'why the fick do people here .....?'

Or if someone says ' but anywhere else in the world you can do that easily just by....'

Or if you are talking about Chinese traditional medicine, as an example, and happen to say something like 'that's just not true, people all over the world do that with no problems whatsoever'.

It just means that rules like logic, basic science, common sense etc don't necessarily apply in China because... no why. Don't ask, just accept it. You think too much anyway.

Stiggs:

Actually, it's a common sense answer sometimes too.

When some new teacher just off the plane starts bitching about how in (western country) we all do this...... or why don't more people here speak English? or Why doesn't the corner market stock my favorite brand of cereal.......

Because, this is China.

You were saying somewhere you are in China 14 years and you don't know why people ....

Agree with Stiggs on mostly foreigners say that .... I 'translate' it as 'China is different world .... sometimes!'

When Chinese say that, they translate the proverb: ' .... do as the Romans do.'

It's a non-answer.  But I prefer it to people telling me it's their 'culture'.  No it's not. It's disgusting behavior.  Did u see the other day where the lady chastised the hell out of that Expectorating Slob who kept spitting on the floor of the Shanghai Metro car?  Gosh, he was/is gross!!   And she, a chinese woman, knows that's exactly what it is, gross behavior, and she called him out on it.  So, don't tell me your gross-ass actions are 'cultural', they are just gross fkn acts. Ok?

This is China (see pic)

But then there's this kind of bullsh*t that is being organized by Chinese nationalisim overseas:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/04/us/chinese-students-western-campuses-...

The Chinese guests at UC SanDiego are offended by the American University inviting the Dali Lama to speak because they feel targeted:

We make good grades. We don’t make trouble. We pay a lot,” Mr. Zhou said. “What is the motivation?”

The motivation? This is the USA...Our "Motherland" which no one dares to offend for it will cost them dearly!

Except Vlad .....

add-it: Notion of Mr. Zhou is sti-pud, not worth of the discussion!

Chinese see world with very different eyes than westerners ... They understand English different than us ....too!

Sometimes I am contemplating that they are doing it intentionally, but sometimes I can see clearly they interpret English their way.

Chinese see Lama as an enemy and West doesn't.

"So, we pay our bills (in USA), we don't cause problems .... why USA is 'hostile' toward us (by honoring Lama)" is Zhou's interpretation.

There's no place in their minds to see USA as 'free choice country' or most likely they don't even know what that is, 'cause ''in China we follow .... and 'rote' ...."

The reason why i asked is I ordered something from Taobao and I got ripped off and then i got told by a Chinese person this is China

Stiggs:

...and they would be right.

It's sort of like if you went to Antarctica and said to someone how f*****g cold it is. They would just shrug and say yeah, this is Antarctica.
