the thing you probably don't understand (about Taiwan and HK in particular) is the people are relatively happy to be 'Chinese', but don't want to be controlled by the authoritarian government that the CCP is.

So, change the government, and you'll have Taiwan back in a flash!

i just spent 2 agonizing days taking my family to my wife's hometown so she can get permission to travel to her country (Hong Kong). The permission is only good for 6 months. I love it when mainland Chinese can parrot the words "(this place) belongs to China", but can't explan how I, as an American, don't need permission.

BH - economically, it's a really smart thing to do.

Many of the 'average people' may not want to be so associated with mainlanders, but they will accept being part of China - if it was different.

The major sticking point is political - not cultural.

But, I do obviously agree - many HK & Taiwanese do not like DaLu ren behaviour. But, this behaviour is reinforced by the CCP.
