Q: China and the 2022 Olympics, good idea or not?

What do you think? Are you hoping this will happen? I'm thinking these kinds of international events are the only things that make China clean itself up. I wasn't in China for the 2008 Olympics and feel like I missed out on all the excitement. Apparently the decision is being made today.

I was in China for the 2008 Olympics...they (the CCP) reneged on every single promise they made to get the Olympics in the first place then set a record-breaking trend for expenditures.

No one (except despot nations) want the Olympics any more because there's no profit to be had (except, of course, the IOC).

Unless the Olympics reverts back to amateur athletes (which they'll never do) or allows performance-enhancing drugs openly (be fun to watch people exploding on live TV) then it would be a natural and logical choice to just let the Olympics die.

Robk:

I totally agree.

People are not interested in watching manufactured gold-winning robots.

They are interested in watching struggles, back stories and people beating the odds... or they want to watch a bunch of steroid freaks pushing the human body's limit as far as it can go.

Some place in the middle is just plain boring.

I think air pollution in Beijing will make much better in 2022 because government is actively make it better!

If they limit the cars but allowing 20000 new cars on the road every month or so isn't clever .

Be better if they just got together and built a permanant facility in Greece. Maybe it would help Greece out.

ScotsAlan:

Ahhh... winter Olympics.... no problem... Greece can import snow from Beijing.

Olympics. That is a thing for those who are not talented enough to be participating in world championships.

That being said. The last olympics in China did go down pretty well. At least on the surface. But more importantly, the aftermath with stories of how journalists where conveniently removed will most likely be repeated. Of course, unless there will be a new regime after the 2019 Chinese Civil War (yeah, I got a flux capacitor)

seems to me that the Winter Olympics should be held in a place that matches the whole winter sports idea.  remember a long time ago when it was Innsbruck?  Now that is a good place for winter sports!

ScotsAlan:

Agree. Winter Olympics should be in a winter sports place. Beijing Olympics had too many empty stadiums. Nobody had a clue what the sports were about.

I will never forget them kicking foreigners out of the city and making them get visas every month . After the Olympics it became very difficult for Chinese people to go anywhere . And who can forget the milk scandal.  Also foreigners booked and paid for rooms and tickets and couldn't get visas .

Here's what I would say to them...

1) Pick a different city other than Beijing (AGAIN) like perhaps Dalian or Harbin (excellent choice). The same city again is BORING... I know you already built all the facilities and had some practice but... Beijing just doesn't seem like a proper choice.

2) No more fake stuff... this means... NO FAKE FIREWORKS.... NO FAKE ATHLETES (drugged up, under the age limit or whatever)...

3) Choose the foreign policy NOW... don't wait for a few months before the Olympics... and then change everything and get everyone screwed up. LEARN HOW TO PLAN AHEAD ON POLICIES AND ADMINISTRATION.

4) Heavily promote tourism to other cities other than Beijing (kind of ties in with point 1).... people in other cities need to learn how to deal with foreigners and get a kick in the butt too.

5) Heavily promote global manners to all Chinese people. I mean shove it down their throats EVERYWHERE... like not spitting, line cutting, basically poor behavior that may further embarrass the Chinese people during the events (and hopefully stick afterwards).

If they can hit these points, then I say give it to them... Chinese NEEDS more foreign interaction. If the government seems unwilling to do this... don't... it will just be a huge embarrassment and waste of money.

Garbo:

They have their work cut out for them. I went to a food exhibition and people were spitting , pushing , bumping into people, etc.  I told my husband if we didn't get out of there soon I was going to hit someone. And the place was completely trashed. Garbage everywhere , things were broken- typical Beijing behavior.

There will be SNOW.....

Edgar Snow is to be resurected.... to be fired into the clouds to propogate snow...

Or maybe they will use a chemical... flack... mushroom spores... or maybe even some evil scientists......

But there will be SNOW.

diverdude1:

I can't go there....    ES by most accounts sold out....   but anyway,,,  how would u like to talk about C events over time?  might be fun, and would undoubtedly liven up this board.....

I expect reversal of global warming trend. World scientists are wrong. Only Chiner scientists can control the climate. Nobel prize.... soon to follow.... non corrupt IOCC officials purchase newly discoverd planets to spread the message..meanwhile... in rural China...

Ridiculous to have the same country (and city) to have the Olympics twice within 4 times.. surety there are more than 4 other count ires in the world that could have it?? And want it.

And I presume everyone's forgotten the numbers of builders who died due to crap safety standards when BJ last was building their stadiums etc...

My wife though it is more a curse than a blessing, because it's usually a financial burden. All that money could go in social welfare, education, things that the country need dearly, at least in the inner, poor provinces. She was shocked by what she saw there when traveling on her own, feeling it was a different country. International image won't do much for those people.

Me... Apart from "Beijing, WTF, when was the last time they got a week straight with snow ?!", I though that Harbin would have been a more sensible choice, it's THE winter city of China. One of the argument to pick Beijing was "we got a fat GDP", but it's true for Harbin too, and those guys would appreciate a smog-free winter for once.

Nessquick:

I talked with some people here about the choice of place without snow- " They will make fake snow there" - " That will be huge waste of money" -  "But we Chinese people are not afraid to spend money ... "

I wish the mountain somehow explode just before the games devil

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
