I know that back home we have a lot of snacks. But it seems like here in China, there are many more snacks. When I go to Walmart, there are just snacks everywhere, along with whole foods, I assume that you either cook from scratch, or eat snacks here. I think the only reason the pre-made meals market is so small is because a lot of families don't have a way or the space to keep them refrigerated. Or is there another reason? One person I know will eat snacks instead of dinner because she isn't that hungry. I don't know, are there a ton of snacks here, more than you have seen back home?
The storage is a huge factor. Plus with the loose limitations of food control around here, the pre-made meals have enough chemicals in them that they are way worse than just making a meal on snacks.
If you're in the office then no only can you keep some at your desk, but it has to be something that you can easily offer to everyone around so you don't loose face.
But my favorite is on long road trips. Any time traffic comes to a stop, without knowing the reason for the stop, half the Chinese will get out of their cars, pop the trunk, have a smoke, and start eating snacks until the cars ahead of them start moving again.
There r just a lot choices here... for almost everything...
It's great that the pre made meals thing has not found it's mark. People generally eat food they prepare or eat at a resturant. Pre prepared food is pretty bland and tasteless in any case. As for the snacks there is so much variety not only within supermarkets but on the street as well. I feel like I will spend as much of my life as I could sampling them and still not make a dent in their number. I dont go for the chippy, biscuity things much prefering the street food, nut, meat, fruit (tanghulu), dried fruit, pancake type snacks.
