Q: Is China worried about their image in Africa?

China is all over Africa. Companies are investing heavily, to the point within a few years' time Chinese investments will overwhelm the European presence there.

Chinese workers are even shipped there to build the roads.

Are they worried what their image might be? What America and the West think of them going there? That they might be viewed as a second colonizing wave?

I think it would be interesting to see what would happen if the Africans knew what the Chinese really think of them... Wink

Oh my ladygaga! I totally disagree with Lolitta2‘s answer! What is China doing in Africa? Colonial Africa? Do you even know what does colonialism mean? You just heard a friend tell you that, I've been there myself. We don't arrest anyone and sell he/she as slave to China, we don't kill anyone and take his/her belongings, we don't rape anyone, those cute mix-blood Chinese-African children are happy to have both dad and mum playing around.
I do agree that we get our part of benefit, why shouldn't we? At least we are doing something, Africa is better, not like Western countries only feed the corrupted African governments with dollars. Make the people feel like beggar, don't want a job but ask for money, food even once I've been asked to give soap.
I taught my kids to not being a beggar, I taught them that to be an African is not a shame, I showed them movies about all great Black people. I am chinese, and I am proud of what China is doing there. At least I feel welcomed there and I know they like Chinese.
BTW I was in Uganda, one of the poorest countries in Africa.

China:
Deep pockets, short arms... Wink China's best friends in Africa are totalitarian regimes that are trade sanctioned and have arms embargoes against them, they like to keep totalitarian regimes around the globe in power (Burma/Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Iran, Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, etc...) Wink Let them have the scraps in Africa... Laughing out loud All the nice things the Chinese do in Africa have strings attached (let us do what we want you get money) and more often than not keep evil people in power.

Also 99.9% of Chinese call Africans (any Blacks actually) "黑鬼" or Hēi guǐ in Pinyin it literally means "Nigger" so that lets you know the amount of "respect" they have for Africans or Blacks... I actually make a point of letting the Africans here in GZ know that's what they're calling them when they're talking to them, funny thing is the Chinese know it's wrong because when they're figuring out what I'm telling the African guys they start running... Laughing out loud

So wenna7, you keep talking like the Chinese are so respectful and accommodating "Africans" in China and mixed Black/Chinese children are often called “小鬼” Xiǎoguǐ" which is "Imp" and they're not looked upon very fondly by locals... Hell you all live here, ask your Chinese colleagues how they feel about Africans, would they like Africans to move into their buildings, date their daughters, sons, etc... The answer will both shock and surprise you.. Sad

They already are viewed as a "second colonizing wave" by many people and the fact that working conditions at many Chinese facilities in Africa are horrendous, even by Chinese standards, doesn't help this perception. There have been numerous scandals where Chinese supervisors worked their African employees to death or even killed them outright.

I don't think Africa has much choice since the US and West are unwilling to cozy up to unstable governments like those of Zimbabwe or Sudan but China's whoring itself out in an attempt to satiate its appetite for resources. After the resources are exhausted China will hang its partner out to dry and move on to the next country. There's no empathy at all.

"黑鬼" or Hēi guǐ in Pinyin it literally means "Nigger"
Chinese made this word directly from English so this is what they learned from the American dictionary. There are many words like this. Where they got it??? USA

kchur:

Are you joking? 黑鬼 means black ghost, and follows a long line of ghost related racial insults, none of which have any real equivalent in English.

Africa is getting a lesson in the "Chinese Business Model" - Make promises that never get kept, sign contracts that mean nothing and will be ignored, get ripped off, then when you complain, "You just don't understand Chinese culture".

Part of the arrangements in Africa were to help provide jobs to the local population, the Chinese companies agreed, then imported tons of Chinese workers.

You think they're happy about this?

"Chinese made this word directly from English so this is what they learned from the American dictionary"

How does the word they use remotely compare to the phonetic sound of the English word?!?! What you've said makes NO sense!? The Chinese word translates to mean the same thing does not mean it was taken from the word, it is THEIR own word... Fritze you are now promoted to 50cent.

Even if it was as you dream it would be they got the word from the USA, they had many choices which word then to use from the same dictionary but simply choose the worse (like any dictionary it would have also said it was a derogatory term) so you only serve to cement my point, they loath the Africans and Blacks. BTW Chinese immigrants and foreign born Chinese would say "黑人 (hēi rén)" that includes the ones who first went to the U.S. which of course is MUCH more respectful. So shut your flap and stop defending racists you jerk...

We also call white people 鬼佬, gui lao. So what?
I never called any black people 黑鬼.
And 小鬼 is not "Imp" It means cute little thing, thought u know Chinese very well……ask around, what does 小鬼 mean!!! My dad call me 小鬼 all the time before college.

U think Chinese hate African, because u live in Guangzhou, where most foreigners r from Africa, there r so many of them, there r so many bad too. I generally don't like 'Merican, Canadian and German in Shanghai, cause I know so many of them, there r so many bad…… I hang out with Italy, Austrian and South-african. But even though, I will not say all Chinese don't like 'Mericcan, Canadian or German or all of them r bad. I enjoyed my days in Africa, everyone is nice to me, they treated me better than my Korean co-workers, I feel thankful, that's it. I will go back to Africa one day for sure.
My co-work's bf is from South-africa will meet him for dinner tonight. Ask around? My co-work let an African move to her bed, how horrible!!! Shock

nei ge shen ma?
nei ge qing!

小鬼 does in act mean "little demon" or "imp", but it's also a term of endearment for children. It's extremely common. It is also a common name for cats.

I've heard "洋鬼子" - yang gui zi - a lot (foreign devil - supposed to be really derogatory, but I'm white, so any name you call me just makes me laugh)

I must say though, after all of my travels, I find the Chinese to be the most racist people I have ever encountered.

Well having equal partnership is one thing when in Business but when you as manufacturer start manufacturing and then in the beginning export to other countries, you need to stick to that. Do not get greedy and go to the country after a while, set up a warehouse, import your own product and then create a retail line with more people from your own country andtotally cut the locals of that is called one way business. Or in laymens terms stealing. So much for developing Africa, everyone wants a piece of the african pie some goin and build infrastructure while others go in and act like they are doing that. Sad Sad

I have recently read a French book called "La Chinafrique" which analyzes most part of the countries of the African continent and their relationship with China...

1) China does the same things Japanese did when they wanted to get more fish quota, they build things for an African country, get the fish quota, in the case of China, its natural ressources, and then move away.

2) Chinese companies who invest in China bring their own Chinese employees from China and seldom use local manpower (as they're often considred African, but also people from the Maghreb area as "lazy"). The Chinese government offers incentives to Chinese people to take this long journey to Africa and work there, in exchange, at their return, they can buy a house, flat for a lower price.

3) Chinese companies who invest in Africa will use only Chinese tools, machinery, equipment to realize big infrastructure (Foton is a well known and sold truck brand in Africa).

4) Chinese companies won't mind to corrupt local governments in order to get what they want or to reach a deal. Some Western companies or governments may do it too. The difference is that Western media will report such practice and government or companies may be affected by public opinions on this matter; Chinese people don't give a damn and the Chinese government won't be affected by any report.

5) China won't mind to support financially or military (no direct involment in each case) states that torture or commit crime against the humanity.....Best example is Sudan....

6) In Egypt, products used to be produced locally by Egyptians are now entirely produced in China and exported to Egypt (especially souvenirs). Don't worry, they change the label at the customs to look like local.

7) African countries are submerged by fake Chinese medicines which have either no effect on the disease, make the patient sicker or kill the patient.

It however seems that African people also starts to see the negative consequences of Chinese presence in Africa (no local employement, Chinese products are sold cheaper than locally produced products, workers are beaten or not paid by Chinese companies), and some movements have formed to fight against the presence of Chinese. But like everything in Africa, people have no power, and the one with power just lick Chinese hands....

As for Chinese people, since the Chinese media are no free and are a means of propaganda, it means that Chinese will only see the good things China does in Africa and they will never know about the bad things.

I trained a Chinese company that was present in about 20 African countries, and several things struck me about it.

First, all the employees that travelled to Africa spoke French. Only French translators were employed by the company, as they claimed English was a lesser used language in Africa, and English translators were not necessary. Yet Chinese schools seek out Africans as English teachers.

The Chinese employees claimed the Africans had disgusting habits and were dirty people. Many complained about spitting, urinating and defecating in the street. Also, how the African streets were strewn with rubbish, because people dropped rubbish everywhere.

The Chinese employees claimed the Africans were racist against them.

The Chinese also claimed they felt there was an anti-Chinese sentiment against them, and beleived that their company might not exist in five years time, if the Africans expelled them from their countries. They felt this was a great affront, and that the Africans were ungrateful after benefiting from Chinese technology.

The employees claimed their company had plans to move many African operations to Europe, but didn't really beleive this would work out. They beleived their company would close in five years.

First of all, China is not only worried about its image in Africa, China is worried about its image everywhere.
Secondly, many Africans know about the malpractices in Chinese companies across Africa. But like all things bad in Africa, the majority have no say over that. The people must bear because the people are poor. We normal Africans have no power.
To understand Africa better, you must first understand one thing. The majority of Africa is ruled by heartless dictators hellbent on remaining in power. Most of these leaders ascened to power through military coups meaning that they're miltia and not necessarily well educated in economics. The biggest effect of these forced dictatorships is that people have no say whatsover over anything that goes on. Any oppostion is met with swift action. This creates a domino effect of undesirable consequences. Poverty, corruption, poor trade policies etc
China, unfortunately, is also hellbent on becoming the superpower of this decade. Even if it means stepping all over poor countries.
I don't blame Chinese people for this. I mean, everyone has got to make a living. Again, this entirely falls in the hands of the elite.
Again, Africa is going to be stepped on all over again and there's not a thing anyone can do.
In my country, Uganda, the people are hard-working, the students are bright, the resources are plentiful but all that is to no avail. The elite and the corrupt will rob the hardworking of their hard work, strip the bright of their education and squander the resources.
This incredible influx of foreigners, especially Chinese, will cause serious problems in the near future when the full effects of this resource theft and profit repatriation becomes clearly visible. And knowing some Africans, blood will be sure to follow.
All this World Bank, IMF aid, starving children stuff is just nonsense. Africa needs to be able to compete fairly in the world trade markets. That is the only way this continent will ever truly develop. No Aid, No China, No west, No help. Just plain and simple fair trade policies.

And to Traveller;
1. Actually, English is more spoken than French in Africa. The company you're describing was probably mainly based in West Africa.
2.''The Chinese employees claimed the Africans had disgusting habits and were dirty people. Many complained about spitting, urinating and defecating in the street. Also, how the African streets were strewn with rubbish, because people dropped rubbish everywhere.''
Ha. Well, you've just described third-world countries. And if you haven't seen the same in China, then you might not be as well 'travelled' as you think.
3. Racism is everywhere. I do not condone it.
4. Some Chinese companies treat Africans like sh** in their own continent and tend to employ only Chinese, what do they expect? Most European employers treat African employees well so they get the due respect. One of the first underwater high powered Interent Optical cables connecting Africa to Europe failed within one month. It was designed by huawei. That is just one example of technology not to be so grateful for.

I've written too much. In conclusion, I think most China-Africa relations have a lot of room for improvement. Otherwise, things are not looking so good for us.

China has invested over $300 Billion in African ventures. Of course they are concerned about their image there.  Soon they will be forced to start granting more visas to Africans and that will be interesting to see the blow-back from Chinese society.

DrMonkey:

"Soon they will be forced". Forced by who, and how ? What kind of political leverage a bribed leader of a small endebted nation have ?
