Q: Chinese feelings and food, why so sensitive?

Why do Chinese get so incredibly offended when you point out to them that some other countries might be better at specific culinary aspects (i.e. India is better at curry, Japan is better at seafood, France is better at bread, etc...) than China? I mean China is really good at some stuff like vegetable dishes and noodles, just not at everything alright.

People here are so sensitive it's amazing. No one in other countries get offended over cuisine, not even our froggy neighbors and god only knows how proud they are of their food.

NB: Point out to them after they've made some wild claim like China makes the best bread in the world or something even though they have never tried bread in any other country, or been overseas), not starting conflicts here.

It is the face thing again. The cult of self aggrandizement using bluffs and lies is a predominant part of prc collective consciousness. They even have a name for it,   假 大 空,these three characters are, Fake/lie,  Big,  Empty.  FBE, now TIC.  LoL

Naturally, their 'feelings are hurt' when you expose their scams and complete lack of rationality.  Darkness abhors light, they cannot co-exist.

RandomGuy:

I swear there were Chinese recently telling me that they saw an article on Wechat saying that some Foreigners come to China and try Chinese food, then never want to go back to their own country again because the food is so much better in China. I asked them whether said Foreigners are from North Korea, and they got super offended. Whoever posted that article must be among the most delusional people in the entire world LOL.

Haha, North Korea, good job.  For the sake of variety next time they do their BS say, 'your jar-da-kung (FBE) is so entertaining, keep going'.  Watch them freak out. This is something they don't  expect a foreigner knowing even in their dreams.

If your wife happens to be there she would be impressed and at the first opportunity asks where you learnt the jargon. LoL

Because China is the 'world' for Chinese .... most of them never travel out of their city, so same food prepared elsewhere cannot be better .....

RandomGuy:

Answer has already been stated, Chinese are arrogant nationalist nutters

RandomGuy:

Yeah, this I knew, just wondering why they are so insecure in their nationalism.

I royally piss them off, I state that food is not important in the west, it's just something we digest like gas in car to get through the day, and I really don't care unless my body gets ill and can't work what I actually eat, this usually shuts them up but a few start ranting about how important food is and I then I really piss them off. Should I tell you about eating monkey brains in Thailand, lizard tail while the head was still moving or yellow rice and goat meat in Somalia, I did not care about the food, I was hungry and the body needed energy, end of story. Do you ever notice the passion for food is always in lazy countries were people expect to work just enough to live but have no ambition to be rich, food is the last thing I think about from day to day, don't even no how to relate to this cultural norm.

ambivalentmace:

I once did a cultural comparison for a class were we documented how much time of a TV series In China and the US was centered around food in the actual show, 2 people talking and eating, meeting and eating etc.

The Chinese shows were 63 percent of the video time in a scene with food. The American shows were 23 percent. The 2 pleasures in life, food and sex, if you can't get one, you have to go for the other.

Don't mention rice, some of them before have claimed rice as Chinese food, even though 2/3 of the world use it as staple with no relation to China whatsoever.

That's a good point.  All these years I have observed two categories of people who make a big fuss about food.

1).  The extremely poor and uneducated.  They don't know anything higher that can enrich their life.  So, food, sex, animal aggression, greed, vanity, that is basically it.

2). Artists, my contacts are primarily classical musicians.  An exceptionally beautiful and talented Japanese violinist with extensive international exposure once told me many a musicians were great cooks, and some even have their cookbooks published.

This had me pondering for awhile.  I was into classical myself but no way would I call myself a food connoisseur.

My guess is that art is primarily about feelings and emotions and that extended to the taste buds.

Dalurens definitely belong to category 1.  Their standard is horribly low given their dire poverty.  These low lives can only pretend. This is why they dare not brag about dalu food in front of traditional Chinese like HongKongers and Taiwanese.  They know they will be skinned within seconds.  These psychotic low lives can only con laowais with their FBE (my post above) by taking advantages of their lack of experience with authentic Chinese cuisine which dalurens retained next to nil, according to my HK and Taiwan contacts.

I've never had a meal in China that I found to be impressive.  Closest would have been by the Uighyurs (or however u spell it) anyway.

But then I come from where good food comes from,,  haha, down by Mexico.  enlightened

I have tried to tell a few of them about Spanish Rice, but I usually just get a blank look.  But then I live in parts of China where the Chinese English teachers understand about 25-35% of what I'm saying.

I find it amusing when I do engage someone about food and they ask what we eat in the UK. I respond with the fact that we eat all kinds of food; British, Italian, Chinese, Indian, American, Spanish, etc. That usually confuses them as they think that you can only eat another cultures food in a specific restaurant that has brought it to your country, changed the recipe to suit local tastes and charged the earth for it.

I got asked  'what do foreigners eat?'.

She just gave me a blank stare when I said meat, vegetables, fruit, bread etc...

I think the answer she was looking for was McDonalds, KFC and pizza.

I facepalm whenever they call fast food joints "foreign food", trying to explain that it isn't is a waste of time so I just leave and try to never meet the aforementioned people ever again.

Even if burgers would be considered "foreign food", their standard of judgment is McDonald's and KFC aka the bottom rock of the lowest quality burgers you can ever get anywhere, although local chains are much worse.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
