Q: Chinese phone SIM locked - what to get now?
I'm not a phone enthusiast. My last phone was the Coolpad 5950, cast off by my wife due to poor WiFi reception.
It served me fine in China, but now I'm gone, I'm reminded it was SIM-locked by China Telecom.
There is a youtube video explaining exactly how to hard reset it using Android tools, but my attempts to replicate the steps failed.
So, my phone is useless abroad. Even more so because no one heard of the brand let alone knows how to unlock it.
I'll be needing a new phone, an after 3 years 4 months in China, I'm adamant that I want NO iPHONE!!!
I don't even care how useful it is, or what it can do. iPhone is like the Sony Vaio of mobile phones - they have overmarketed it to the point that I don't believe it has any value for money.
It's either an Android or a Windows Phone for me. I'm curious what people's experiences are with Windows Phones: It seems really handy to have inbuilt Office on your phone for starters.
Having read up on the Lumia brand, I was pleasantly surprised that Windows bought up the quintessential "brick"-era mobile phone company - Nokia.
Is it like how BenQ bought up Siemens, or Lenovo bought IBM? Will they make a mess of the tech legacy?
I'm hoping a bit of the old Nokia tech and design is now present in Lumias. Anybody have any experiences to share?

Hey man, good on you getting out and moving on! Is this permanent! If so congrats.
Listen theres tons of perfectly decent phones out there. You can get a basic android phone unlocked that will make you perfectly happy. I'm sure those windows lumia phones are good too.
Don't get caught up in tribalism. This is 2015. Nearly everything windows/android/mac/ios whatever works perfectly well. Just buy whatever you think looks cool and does what you need at the lowest price.
Don't go for a windows phone! It doesn't have the apps that you really want or need. Mrs shabi251 ignored my advice last year and now a year later will give away her samsung windows phone. Shabi251 and I have both recently upgraded for new Chinese phones before we leave China for good and the value for money is impressive. Microsoft Office is now a free to download app too, but there are plenty of equally good alternatives. In the 1500—2200￥ range, I'd recommend xiaomi mi4 and note 2. Meizu mx4 or mx4 pro, Nubia Z9 mini or Huawei honor 6 plus. All of them have easy google play installation except for the honor 6 plus, although you'll probably.need a vpn for them to work in China. An alternative appstore which I use in China is 1 mobile market which is more international than the system app store you'll have pre installed.
