haha,,, you are going to love this story then !

first, I am the same as you.  the grossest thing on Earth is a devil-spawned cockroach.  scare hell out of me too.

now,  go get yourself a sidewalk table around midnight in some Ermita/Malate shit-hole bar in the summertime and be prepared to have the fk scared out of you and creeped-out beyond measure as the huge ass 'Flying Cockroaches' dive-bomb you !   'tis a fkn trip !

I don't like the creepy little bastards but they don't scare me, I have a size 10 shoe that can take out any roach.

Spiders though ... now they do freak me out.

You're not alone, I had never seen a roach before I came to China.  Those things give me the heebie jeebies in a major way.

The fear is psychological; rationally you know they stand zero chance against you. You probably associate them, correctly, with issues like filthiness, disgusting, garbage...etc. It is these you have a problem with.

I used to squash them without a blink. These days I step aside when I see one, not because I suddenly become afraid of cockroaches, but because I understand they have a purpose on earth. Before human invent ways to dispose of garbage hygienically 'who' do the dirty work? Same for other scavengers. I thank them and respect their professionalism. In fact, they are free of charge reporters, they tell me something is wrong about a place, which is an indication of the kind of people there. Smile

On that note, considering the pollution in China, stay the hell away from eating crabs from chinese waters as they are scavengers too, i.e. if you consider your health more important than face, taste, the need to conform to peer pressure......etc.

I would like to add that it might be good to steer clear of eating any kind of animal liver as well.  liver detoxifys, but it also stores toxins as well...

not near as many in my home as there was when I moved here. not often I see them. But, when I do, I hesitate, I flinch......even when they are upside down dying, I won't touch them...get something and pick it up and get rid of it.

BUT

next month, I plan to collect them and throw them in the blender and make a delightful meal. That is my wish, my plan, my dream ........  protein rich and tasty.

Silly fears I have...... hope I do get over it.

Yup.....was introduced to the Chinese roach within a few days of arriving. Could hear them skittering about my bedroom in the dark.

"click"....light on....nothing

Then the bugger came over the head board and jumped on the bed....that was the last thing he did.

Hate the bloody rats too...had one come in from the balcony 5 floors up and run across me when I was on the sofa....freaked out big time!!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
